Wez
Hello All, I am just looking at some oil coolers and was wondering if anyone knows if this one will fit in the passenger side air duct, i am guessing yes as the other side holds the stock IC which I think is about the same size but alot deeper :- Width - 235mm Height - 260mm Rows - 34 Wez
Wez
No one got any idea? Dude, did you get chance to have a look?
Guest Terry S
Are you sure you actually need one Wez? a 34 row is a monster BTW
Wez
I need one for track days as my turbo is only oil cooled and i have no oil cooling at the moment. I was going to go for a 25row but if i can fit a 34row i may as well put the bigger one in.
Guest Terry S
I think that is a daft size Bud, I had a 21 Row and everyone thought it was overkill. Oil choice is important mate, and if you are having a cooler make sure you get a thermostatic sandwich plate.
Wez
I can get a 25row which is 235mm wide and 194mm high, it also holds 0.50ltr of oil. I was just wondering whats the largest I could fit in the passenger side vent area
Guest Terry S
You are on a mission mate. There is no point going huge TBH, and if the stat ever fails ( and they can) you will never get the oil to operating temperature! Decent oil ( 10-50 or even 60) and a 16-19 row:thumbs:
Wez
OK cool, thanks for the info
SimonB
If you go too big there won't be any airflow over half the cooler because the washer tank is in the way, so the extra size will be wasted. Also if you have a FMIC the piping gets in the way too. I just fitted a 19 row 235mm one, the dimensions are 147x235 (that's just the matrix, not the mounts) and it holds 0.38l. That fits nicely and is ample size I would say.
Wez
Simon have you got an oil temp gauge fitted, if so what was the before and after difference with the oil cooler? I don`t have a FMIC so thats not an issue

I don`t have a FMIC so thats not an issue Well, I did have one fitted before, but it was plumbed into my old oil filter takeoff which I swapped out. I was going to put it in an adaptor in the oil line but it stuck out into the oil flow too much so I decided to forget that and put it in the sump instead. I'm waiting on an adaptor though, so it isn't plumbed in at all at the moment. I'll let you know when I get it plumbed in again. After 15 minutes of lapping Castle Combe last year on a hot day before I fitted the cooler I was seeing 128C oil temp (measured at the filter takeoff)! SimonB
Well I'm no expert, but since the temp at the takeoff is going to be less than in the oil galleries I wouldn't be comfortable with 130c or more. I think 140C is about the max before the oil is going to start breaking down. I'd hope for more like 110C or so max.
Chris Wilson
Over 100 to boil of condensation, under 140 although "proper" race oils will stand more. If you are serious about track days you will need a bigger than 25 row cooler. The RB26 Skyline engines need at least a 40 row, but the front diff puts some heat in the engine oil. I have a good used oil to water intercooler here, you could possibly plumb that into the bottom rad hose? It needs no airflow. Beautiful things, very expensive new. Might be an alternative if you are struggling to mount something big enough, but bear in mind it will put extra load on the water cooling system. Made by Laminova. I think they are on the Think Automotive site nowadays.
