Ball Bearing whiiirring noise....advice

Hi

i had a search around but didnt find another thread close enough to my problem....

My supe (93 mk4 Auto NA import) seems to have developed a whining/whirring noise that can be heard from inside the car and after closer inspection it sounds like its coming from inside the cam belt cover section. its there from when the engine starts and gets higher in pitch as the revs change do, infact it seems to change pitch exactly as the revs do. its not terribly loud, but noticable when the radio isnt on, and not so noticable when driving around. can hear it slightly as well when you stand next to the bonnet.

The timing belt was done 3k miles ago when it was due done by previous owner, but on the receipt there is no detail about the tensioners being done. could it be this? i have had a couple of garages listen to this and they confirm its defo a ball bearing type sound. one garage has said they would look at it and then give me a call on what htey find, their plan would be to take each belt off one at a time and start the engine to see if they can identify what belt is driving the noise and take things from there.

i mean i cant be sure but best guess for where the whirring sound is coming from to me is from inside the timing belt cover.

does anyone have any advice - perhaps areas that i should get checked? possible parts replacement costs (roughly)? this garage in particular charges £40/hr

and most importantly, should i be driving the car with this "fault"?

appreciate any help i can get

cheers - (a worried) Dave

Hi both, thanks very much for your replies, NIC i couldnt quite here the PAS pump noise over that sweet sounding exhaust ;) i guess it could be any of the 6 or 7 things driven off the belts, could i buy replacement bearings or would i be looking at replacing the units themselves ie a PAS pump, Auxiliary belt tensioner or whatever is creating the noise?

Thanks again for your help, just trying to arm myself with as much info as poss so i dont get taken for a ride by any of the garages quotes etc.

cheers! :)

well i had a 2nd garage take a nosey at this, one i have used before, and they did more than just look and listen...this guy used what looked like a home made stethascope and placed it on each componant....water pump, alternator etc, and his ear to the other end and within 2 mins, we could actually hear the rattling of the ball bearings from the alternator pully! i was stunned, never seen these practises before and couldnt believe how obvious it was after listening to each part. so he is 99% sure that thats where the bearing noise is coming from, the voltage from the alternater seems fine but the bearings sound like they are going. so i am gonna hunt around for a replacement. The owners mechanic is a supra owner and we got chattin, i forgot to ask if he uses this forum, so if the chap from GB Auto in irvine sees this, give me a shout! :)

hi chris

thanks for that, i have since checked out http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/ and can see the 2 sets you refer to. the prices on this thing are in $ and probably out but then again i have phoned mr T for a few things before and even had the sales guy laugh as he quoted me rediculous prices lol. i need to try get under the car to find the alternator part info....not sure of the amp rating for a mk4 auto NA - have found various ratings, 80, 90, 100 and even 130A for alternators for supes. would it matter if i put in a 100A but standard was 90A?
