Geo
So im looking to Upgrade to the Iphone on O2, but im getting shafted by hidden fee's etc. The iphone i'll be giving to the Gf, as TBH i dont like them. So my Question is this?? Can i order one from the States and use it over here after i jailbreak it?? http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone
imi
The iphone is going to be available to other networks Vodafone and Orange soon. So if you are not in a hurry I would suggest waiting. Yes - you can jailbreak an iphone, however with every upgrade you need to jailbreak it again (assuming you want to take advantage of the bug fixes and new features). I personally would wait or get one from Europe (where they are unlocked - officially).

All i need is just the phone as i'll jailbreak it, and then stick the Gf's orange Sim in it.

Geo
So why are you getting another on then?? Iv got an N79 dude, and im happy with it. This is just for the Gf as she wants the iphone. Crazy i know.
Miguel
I would do as imi says and wait for Orange and Tmobile to release their plans and tarrifs. Your ballgame though.
Thorin
Iv got an N79 dude, and im happy with it. This is just for the Gf as she wants the iphone. Crazy i know. But you're giving her yours... then buying another? I'm confused.
Samsupra
So is it definitely coming onto Vodafone? any rough dates? as im wondering whether to just wait or just buy one from O2, but i'd preferably want to stay on vodafone as all my family and gf is on it...hmm decisions! AdzC
A friend of mine recently bought an iPhone off eBay and managed to jailbreak it without any problems. I think there are quite a few tutorials online although as has been said it will be available on all the big networks very soon.

Im Not giving her my Nokia N79, just want a iphone for her, but as said above if i upgrade early im getting shafted with hidden fee's etc. So the plan was just to buy one, jailbreak it, and pop her sim in. Jailbreaking is easy, so much more you can do with them once there done. It dont say when they will be availible though on other networks, just says coming soon. I suppose there writing up contract and tarrifs etc.

Check out The iPhone Dev Team's site for information on which phones can be unlocked. It seems the easiest to unlock is the 3G, not the 3G(S) I suppose there writing up contract and tarrifs etc. I reckon they'll be getting them out of the door at Christmas and it's going to be entertaining to watch
Geo
So by the looks of things you can just buy the iphone and its unlocked, but if you go buy one with a contract from O2 then its locked to them?? Taken From Dev Team: SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S) This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone. What this paragraph means is that if you buy a factory unlocked iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$ or £££ in our case - then you can use any SIM. They don't sell factory unlocked iPhones in the UK at this moment. I believe one of the countries they do is New Zealand, and some of Europe, but they are well over £500 each.

Yes, O2 exclusivity deal is coming/has come to an end. Register your interest. Vodafone Orange/T-Mobile (They're merging) There's also talk of it coming to the 3 network. As Martini has mentioned it could be before Christmas. Orange may be as early as next month.
martini
Orange announced first, T-mobile are merging and Vodafone also wanted in. Word on the rumor mill as Miguel has said above, is that "3" will also get the iPhone. With all the major networks joining up, there is potential for an excellent price war. £35 a month is too expensive IMO.

Todd
Short and sweet version, if the baseband on the phone = 05.11.07 No unlock, just jailbreak as described. Lot of folk have upgraded to the latest firmware and installed the baseband through itunes, that's why there are more iphone than normal for sale on ebay as folk realise they can no longer use their phones

The first network to offer unlocked iPhones legally and officially in this country could make a fair bit of money - just on the sale of the phone. Pete
Buy one from Italy - they're unlocked I believe. I'm fed up of jailbreaking and unlocking mine on every update.
Abz
bloody iPhone's! I got the 2G one, now everyone jumping on the bandwagon because it's seen as a fashion accessory! My missus wants one, so does my little sisters! They won't use even 10% of it's abilities! Like mentioned mate wait for a couple months, even more as your not due your upgrade & you will be charged more. Don't dismiss the 3G, it's just as good as the 3GS! imi
Rumours are that Apple are going to clamp down on jailbreaking of their phones - especially the 3GS. I am sure there will always be a way around it - but perhaps not as easy as it is today.
Pete
Do you really think they haven't been trying to up until now?
imi
Do you really think they haven't been trying to up until now? i am sure they have, but its been very easy to jailbreak an iphone and run pirate applications - so their efforts until now have been very lapse now theyre taking it to the next level by changing the bootrom of the 3gs to try and stop it from being pwned.....(as in making it much more difficult) - still not impossible.
