martini
Fook that. I'd rather work for a pittance and spend my time LIVING. Me too... and this is why we are not paid the same as Investment Bankers!
martini
Some good points caseys. I've often suspected that these average figures are heavily skewed by a small number of very high earners in any given bank. The median figure would be more revealing but it wouldn't change the reasoning behind (or the need for) bonuses. It's supply and demand in a competitive marketplace. Then take into account the fact that the press like to blow everything out of proportion constantly... and we are where we are.

farmer
so it appears that its all justified then, and we should be grateful to the banking industry. i (we) the general public say "sorry"

Snooze
I liked the original idea of opening up the banking market to smaller competitors. But....errrr... Tesco and Virgin? Smaller competitors? Should be fine as long as the legislation prevents them (Tesco especially) from cross-selling banking products (eg. better banking rates for Tesco shoppers, etc.). Don't want Tesco turning into more of a mega-corp! That said, if more entrants are allowed into the market, it is going to have to be companies with this sort of clout, so they've got the capital to support themselves (rather than tax payer money) when things go pear shaped again. So - I like the idea of opening up the market, but I'm not sure there's a really good way of going about it.....
Max Headroom
Why bother trying to talk about it? We can do jack sh*t about it. Its not as if they really care about us!

stevie_b
I don't have a problem with new participants (either formed from bits of Northern Rock/ RBS/ etc, or complete newcomers) entering the retail banking scene. Their success or failure depends on whether they offer competitive products and a reasonable service. I'd be surprised if the industry can't support a small number of new players.
