michael
You're a f"cking hypocrite, you spend every moment of your working life on this forum or doing other none work related things; proof of which you stick up in threads on here. I've been on here a lot recently as we don't have much work on, but every time over the past 3.5 years I've logged on your here. Perhaps the big difference between us is that it takes you 40 minutes to slap your head-wand down against your special keyboard and construct something that your helper monkey can come back and edit later to remove all the mistakes. I take a few seconds to churn out this rubbish and can usually do it while I'm waiting for something exciting to happen at work. As for being a hypocrite... I disagree, I'm not lazy, dirty, smelly or work-shy.. just good at multi-tasking

DaveK
The postal workers don't seem to realise that they are in a competitive business now. They don't like employees being replaced by cheaper / faster machinery? Hard luck I'm afraid - no business can just focus on keeping their employees happy - they have to remain competitive. And sometimes, that means decisions the workforce won't like. And as somebody has already pointed out - going on strike is long term suicide anyway. They are not the only option these days - force people to use alternatives, and then see how hard it is to make them come back.

Branners
Their lack of comprehension at the damage they will cause their own jobs is what surprises me. They are on strike because they are worried they may lose their jobs in the future. However, they have put people in the position that they no longer trust the Royal Mail to deliver and they find couriers or email invoices etc to avoid the problem. Those people realise it is either cheaper or more reliable and stick with that solution. And so the number of people using Royal Mail reduces meaning they dont need so many staff and will make them redundant anyway. Posties always had a status of being protected in my youth. They would get respect, they didnt get their bikes nicked, they didnt get attacked. I feel that respect has gone, I no longer look at a Postie as being a friendly face, they have become jobsworths and not a public service. They have dug their own graves. As somebody said above, give it a year and the Royal Mail will be in dire straits and begging the government for money to keep them running. And where will the money come from? You and me. JS2004
Not the 1st time they are going on strike, there have been many strikes over the past few months, this I believe is the first of MANY nationwide strikes (120K workers). If I dont turn up for work, I dont get paid - perhaps in their case this is not so which is why they continue to throw their toys out of the pram. My understanding is that they are looking for More money (as usual) Refusing modernisation of the postal service (new sorting equipment etc) - due to fear of some people losing jobs) Think they are looking for a nice kustie job paying good money for the rest of their lives at the taxpayers expense. Person I work with - her husband is a postie. shes having to put in overtime because they dont get paid for being on strike - just thought that was relevant. I think their main complaint is the working conditions too, not the money.. but who wouldnt like a bit more £?
marbleapple
Posties always had a status of being protected in my youth. They would get respect, they didnt get their bikes nicked, they didnt get attacked. I feel that respect has gone, I don't think thats just the Postmen though and I don't think it is anythign to do with striking. Kids start fires just to throw stones at fire engines nowadays etc. I thought the Post Office was privatised? If the BBC are right, it sounds like they're not striking over pay. Onlookers tend to spout things like "greedy posties, they want more pay." Well, not in this case it seems. Those people should try to look into the facts before sounding off. Please don't make useful and appropriate comments.... it makes the rest of us look bad
Snooze
Isn't the main problem with the Royal Mail system that although they have some control over their costs (eg. underpaying or overpaying workers, etc.), they don't seem to be driving their income up much. Surely the solution here is to put up the price of stamps? Stamped mail is hugely loss-making for Royal Mail, isn't it?
Branners
I thought the Post Office was privatised? so are the banks, but they got £500bn or something from the government when they asked for a handout.

I disagree, I'm not lazy, dirty, smelly or work-shy.. just good at multi-tasking There are plenty off differences. The most obvious being you actually care about making sure everything you write is spot on, in a world that doesn't care. Primarily because you need something to fill your life that is else wise empty. Otherwise you need to prove something to yourself, trying to imagine you’re more than just a bottom feeder. The ones that actually lack any real intelligence or establishment in life feel the need to do that; hence your tragic existence. You'll find that any of my written work, published to our clients is exceptional - But is matters in the real world Mitch.... In the real world, not on a chat forum. Now, stop being so deluded by pretending you're any better than any of the decent chaps that cart away your used copies of loser weekly.

I don't expect people to be putting down degree level English but I do expect people to make an effort. The difference is Branners (and you know this), there is certainly a big gap between writting legible sentences and writing in text speak. What Mitch preaches is pedantic, what you refer to is sense.
