martini
I was a little young too, and I mean no offence to any who were involved at the time. The way I see it, the unions/workers were demanding more money than there jobs commanded (which is proven as similar workers abroad were working for much less), and it became more cost effective for the UK to outsource many of its traditional industries. Steel (to an extent), Shipbuilding, coal mining and various others have gone due to this. OK, so the unions for these Government 'owned' services and companies said "we need/want more money" etc and the Government said "Actually, there are people willing to do the same or similar, for the same or less pay - so see you later"? Isn't that the very nature of capitalism? I have had three things lost in the Royal Mail this year - none of my UPS/DHL stuff has been lost. UPS/DHL even collect from my office! NO she did that to beat the miners & unions by bring in scab workers instead of listening to reason & bring in new working practices & looking after the people they where putting out of work ie; new jobs

Isn't that the very nature of capitalism? Before Thatcher the unions weilded way to much power and were basically able to demand whatever they wanted and hold the government to ransom. Margaret Thatcher put an end to that.
JamesC
I got my post today. Posties are on strike tomorrow http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article6885406.ece# She said: "We're not standing here over pay but because I'm going in there and week after week they're cutting the staff, cutting the hours and expecting the same work to be done. It's not possible to do that and maintain a good service for the public."

Matt H
So did Hitler though!! Can you leave Nazi's out of it for one thread! You've just compared Thatcher to Hitler.... Seriously, during bad times people vote for extreme changes (just look at the BNP now). No they’re not, a small minority are; a handful that will never grow beyond that. Do you ever think in the foreseeable future a clown outfit like the BNP will get elected to govern? They’re just flavour of the month.

Gaz6002
I'll stand by that all day long Gaz, not in this country. In a democratic, predominantly white European country with high immigration levels though. More similar that it first appears. Just because we don't like them, doesn't mean we're not like them

Matt H
i think they will get further than most people think They'll get to a certain point as people are voting for them not out of wanting them to get in, nor because they're racist, but because the other parties are failing in a the immigration sector and voting BNP would make them act more effectively. Most people wont.

Matt H
Don't be so naïve. Don't be so retarded. They're nothing more than news papers sellers, t.v show topics and the reason why shed loads of people tuned into a show they never watched before last night. They'll never get anywhere near power, only an idiot would imagine that.
