Gear stick shakes

I have a manual 1993 twin turbo supra, amongst other things I have noticed that while driving along and building revs my gear stick shakes. I know it is normal to have some vibration but this isn't normal, could this be an imbalance in the prop shaft? Or what else could it be?

Thanks guys!

As you say there's normally a bit of movement, but it shouldn't be severe. Is the gear change itself 'tight'?

The first thing to check is the gearbox mounts, if there's been an oil leak the rubber mount can degrade causing the box to move around. It's a fairly common on issue on the 6spds to have a leaky selector shaft seal which can cause the oil to rot out the box mount.

Engine mounts would be the next check but it's very rare to have an issue there.

Do you have any hard vibration from the rear end (wheel hop), or is this under conditions here you have full grip, i.e over 50mph?

Homer - I can only feel the gear stick vibrate, i do find that chaning gears can be a bit difficult at times and often find it a bit difficult to get in to sixth (that could be driver error haha) I know that when I bought the car from Suzuka sports they informed me that the gear box had gone under a rebuild.

How and where do i check the gear box mounts? (i apologise for my stupidity but i dont quite know my way around a supra quite yet, this is the first i've owned!)

Mcgoo - Oh right well you've ruled out the prop shaft then thanks for that!

Thanks guys

The stick always vibrates a little, it's not all that refined, so won't be like many newer cars. 6th always takes a bit of getting used to as it's not directly behind 5th gear, the lever has to be moved slightly to the left (closer to 3rd) to get it in.

Regarding the box mount, all I can say is that if you have to ask it's best to take it to a professional to have checked, the car will need to go up on a lift for it to be fully inspected.

If the box has been out for a rebuild that does raise questions, they are VERY strong boxes and don't normally have issues aside from oil seal leaks. It's possible that they didn't reinstall the prop mount spacers correctly (a very common mistake as most garages think they are washers, which they are not). This could also cause a vibration.
