Thinking of it myself Dash. I personally know three people who have undergone the treatment and I have sought professional advice regarding risk and success.

All results have been extremely positive. My friends are all over the moon with the results and the doctors I've asked have both provided positive reports and referred me to professional consultants.

All in all a very good experience so far. :)

I had mine done in 2001 at Optimax in London - I was quite badly short-sighted. I can tell you right now it was the best money I've ever spent (and that includes buying the Supra)!! Waking up and being able to see clearly for the first time in 30 years was quite emotional. Its still as good today as it was then - I always call the my bionic eyes as they're better than anyone elses for seeing distant things!

I had mine done at Optimax in Manchester in August. Best two and a half grand i ever spent. Hope you aren't squeamish though bud, feels weird when they cut the outer layer of your eye!!!

If you go with Optimax i 'may' be able to get you £500 off treatment as they sent me one of those promotions. Whoever you decide to go with it will be the best thing you ever did mate. Good luck.

As Im long sighted my optician said it probably would be a waste of money for me.

For those with pefect vision, you generally become long-sighted with age. The optician said it would only be a matter of time before my eyes would be back at the same level as they are now so said just to get contact lenses and save a couple of grand in the process.

Chap at work paid for his wife to have hers done, she had an absolute nightmare. Consultation said she'd just need the basic procedure so they booked in. On the day of the operation they decided they would need to "slice" the eye to create a flap, this didn't heal properly and she had to back in again after being in lots of pain. They ran through things again and sent her home, took a while to heal and he had to take a week off to look after his now-blind wife.

Having said all this her eyesight is perfect now and she's glad she had it done.

Probably cheaper tohave the laser in the long run (maybe)

I'm in two minds. I want to be able to wake up in the morning and to be able to see so much, I hate the inconvience of having contact lenses. Staying at peoples houses means you always have to prepare, and on holiday they can be a right bitch when it comes to the pools etc.

If i wasn't concerned about the lasting effects, I'd have it done tomorrow (and that my perscription just got worse again after 1.5 years :( ). Everyone I know that has had it done has perfect eyesight now, even the ones that had problems at the start...

Such a gamble, but who knows...

Thanks guys. So, all in all, this looks positive!

Isnt there a limt to what they can do?

My left eye is now -10.50?

I have often thought of getting them done, the money i spend out would be saved in contact lenes in a matter of years

Well, UltraLase told me they go up to -9. (If all goes well for me, I'd like to get it for my wife who's -6.)

From what I've been reading UltraLase are the only provider in the UK that have totally moved away from blades and use lasers in the flap-cutting process, in addition to the actual corneal restructuring.

But I am very squeamish when it comes to eyes. I can't even get a contact lens in. So the whole thing scares me sh1tless!

I should add, my main motivation for having this done is not aesthetic. I get regular debilitating migraines, nearly one a week and usually on a Saturday. A friend of mine used to get them regularly, but since having laser eye surgery, he's never had one since!

I know the chances of laser surgery getting rid of my migraines is fairly slim, but I'll take that chance, as I currently have to write-off around 50 days a year. :(

I had it done about 7 years ago with AllClear in Belfast. The guy who did it was Gerry McKelvey (or mcKervey?)who had been working in the laser eye field since 1987 in the USA. It was quick, and my eyesight is 20/20, however I know some people who got cheapies done like Boots in Glasgow and had swollen and pussing eyes afterwards.

Now i think about it, the worst part of the entire day was the drive home [sAD][/sAD]

I remember I was not allowed to drive until the next day, on the way home i had a black coat over my head as any light was terrible and it was a summers day ! I would recommend blues brothers sunglasses and whatever you can get to black out light for a few hours after.

I paid for the Mrs to have hers done shortly after I met her. Best £1500 I ever spent apparently. She had the more expensive lasik treatment. In fact you know what I'l llet her tell you the effects its had on her life.

its the best thing I have ever done, it really did change my life. No more fiddling with contacts and as regards swimming it's brilliant, no more splashed glasses or contacts filling with water. You have approx 3-4 days discomfort, your eyes feel scratchy, bit like leaving your contacts in too long. I found the results were amazing. If you have trouble with night glare they can do something to your eyes at the same time which reduces the glare. I can literally stare at approaching cars at night and it doesn't hurt my eyes.

Ditto that - I just went to bed and took Ibuprofen.
