LCD TV - Repair or Replace

After 3yrs and 1 blessed month my Sharp Aquos has picked up what seems to be a common fault with them. Have spoken to Sharp and they think its the backlight which is £164 but if it isnt and they cant repair it they are still going to charge me £74.

Have looked around prior to the knowledge of a repair being available, yes dumb i know, and found that LG are doing a set for £550ish that would not only be a replacement but an upgrade. Have looked over the web and there, as yet, seems to be no common fault with them.

So which way to jump. I have lost faith with the aquos and how i didnt stick my foot through it last night i have no idea but its only £164 if it can be repaired. And there is no guarantee that down the road that the LG isnt going to kick me in the rear.

Edging towards new LG and then try and shift the Sharp as faulty on eBay.

Any thoughts on this?

Get a new one, 3 years is ancient Tv wise these days. Its not like the good old days where Tv's could last you 10 years no probs. Companies intentionally make products finite so you'll have to repair/upgrade within a shorter space of time increasing they're turnover. A nice new big LCD sounds just like what you need here. Dont be afraid of going cheap either, i bought an unknown make off the net about a year and a half ago and it still works fine, ive not had a single problem with it, just read lots of reviews before hand (not just the one from the seller) and seperate the bargains from the waste of times.

I've tried fixing lcd's before, almost a pointless exercise as when you don't have the schematics there's only so much you can check.

I would just buy another one and as mentioned before, don't be afraid of the no-name brands, I have been told that LG manufacture that vast majority of LCD screens and sell a lot of them on to the no-name brands to be used in their telly's. So essentially a fairly good brand of screen for a little less money.

If it is just the back light that is gone, I MAY be interested in it. I've fancied building a surface desk for a while, however I can't bring myself to buy a flatpanel just to strip it to pieces :)

Well, in that case i MAY be interested in selling it to you my friend. :p

This is what i am going after.

The discount reeled me in! :D

Looks like a nice TV, response time is okay and you get a decent variation of connections (Why you'd ever need 4 HDMI connections tho i dont know :p) and a TV in connection is always a plus if you want to hook your laptop too it and watch movies on the big screen that you cough cough *aquired*. Nice Tv by the looks of it....and at £1.50 off...:D What i would say is though, price compare it and have a look round, see if you can find it cheaper, i got £90 off a laptop the other day by ordering it from Amazon rather than Play.com where it was on *Offer*....my arse ! lol

Sale Of Goods Act.. A TV should last more than 3 years, regardless of what the warranty says. They'll either fix it or replace it free of charge.

No theres is a standard warentee of a year! unless you extend it which is normaly a charge! As far as i know only a 3 year warrentee as standard with john lewis!

If there is no extended warrentee you will have to pay!

When you buy things 99% of the time you agree to a contract with the company you buy a product from! Even though you dont realise! As soon as you pay you then have to go via there practice!

Like if some one buys a bike from us, no matter how many problems they get, no matter now much they dont want it even if they havent picked it up, there is no way they have a rite for a refund! as our poilicy says on there recept, thats they fill there details on (in small txt) "a deposit or a full payment undertakes a contract between us and there customer refer to our sales policy" somthing like that, they then have to go buy our sales policy as they have agreed to the contract between us, just buy passing us the money!

Of coarse we help our customers us much as possiable and try not to go with our policy but theres lol ;)

If you read the link you will see that what you have just said is what you have been told to believe as a consumer for years.

I can't be bothered going into it all again as it has been covered in many threads over the past year or so.

Basically the EU legislation covers you for up to 6 years with any electrical product. Manufacturers are not allowed to dismiss you within this time.

As an ex Store Manager for 10 years (and had to deal with this alot) the above is correct to a point. The consumer can take a product back upto 6 years under the EU legislation but they must prove that the product had a defective fault at the manufacturing stage. Thus 1 Yr Manufactueres guarantee covers you but after that you must prove the TV, etc did not last beyond that due to the stated above.. The fact really is you cant so it is pointless going back to Currys etc 3 years down the line saying my TV has broken. It will get you nowhere.

Curry's have some great 50" at the moment for 600 ish. depends what size you prefer but a great buy. LG or Sammy http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0810102602.1259141076@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdhadeimehdkeicflgceggdhhmdfnm.0&page=Product&fm=11&sm=0&tm=4&sku=258579&category_oid=-34812
