Disconnecting airbags

Swap the steering wheel when on track? i have a stock non air bag one you can have FOC mate.

Might take you up on that cheers!

Take out the airbag ECU, it's located under the centre console storage box.

It will probably trigger an error code though. Not sure how to get around that..

Is that a black box marked up with "decceleration unit" by any chance?

Don't do what a styling bod did at an OEM I used to work for. In removing the drivers seat he decided to 'cut' the yellow wires that were hindering his progress. Nearly took his head off when the safety devices erupted!

Its always adviseable to disconnect the battery before working on or around the air bag circuit just to be on the safe side.

A friend of mine went blind when shunting another car. Someone hit into him from behind causing him to shunt the vehicle in front. The air bag went off, Probably helped alot even at low speed. But as a result his thumb was wedged between his eye and eye socket. Thought of that actually scares me. I have the passanger bag, But no drivers bag. Not due to the above. I just wanted a nice steering wheel.

easiest way to stop air bags going of is disconnect the pre tensioner on one of the seats, the reason being is that if the air bag light is lit up then the air bag will not go off as the system is designed to pull you into your seat and that extra bit away from the air bag itself when deployed, so where the module senses a problem with the pre tensioner it disables the air bag firing mechanism, tried and tested method while recovering crashed cars where the bag did not deploy.

Done this to mine as it had a fault somewhere. As others have said just unplug the Airbag ECU. It kills the whole system so no lights or anything. Then if you want it back just plug it in (with the battery disconnected and after waiting 90 seconds of course)

Ouch!

That's one reason why you should avoid crossing your arms while steering. You also risk breaking your arm if the airbag goes off.

I can`t believe the damage they cause, the passenger side airbag actually smashed the windscreen on 1 particular supra!!

The windscreen is designed to be pretty weak from inside -> out for safety reasons (i.e. your head passing through it when you didn't wear a seatbelt - but then who'd be stupid enough to not use an active safety device...?) so it's not that bad. I know someone who punched theirs while in a strop once, and broke it :) Thus increasing to strop factor 9, Mr Sulu :rlol:

14 yrs original airbags are these still ok.

Good point. They do have a shelf life. But to what component needs changing needs some googling i think. Maybe its the explosive part? or the material weakens over the years?

And i found - The time limit is due to two things, one the stability of the propellant and two the structural integrity of the bag/stitching itself. Not much good if the charge ignites and the bag disintegrates rather than inflating.

Also - theft of airbags is on the increase as breakers are not allowed to sell them on ? As they have to detonate them or be banned from purchasing cat b's?

To my knowledge it 15 years and airbags should be replaced!

As to remove, you can get a little gadget off of snap-on which plugs onto the airbag wiring harness which replicates the resistance of an airbag and thus then able to drive with no error codes or light on and the rest of the system still working :-)...other wise do what the other chap said and disconnect the pretensioner and isolate the whole system.
