Baz018
HI, my supra at the mo is twin turbo with 5 speed manual, will the gearbox cope with a single turbo upgrade 500-600bhp.
marbleapple
I was under the impression the answer was no. 400bhp and less.
Dr_Doom
I doubt it very much.. It's a lucky dip whether they cope with BPU levels so i couldn't see it lasting long with that much power going through it.
Kirk
No chance. Even with a good clutch and going easy on it, the minute you show it a fair amount of boost and it will pop
Gaz6002
It's the torque levels you need to think about but people's 5 speed boxes have failed at BPU level with the TT engine. I very much doubt it would last long.
Baz018
is there anthing i can have done to make it withstand more power. Or is a 6 speed the only way?
Nic
A lot have failed after a 2JZ-GTE swap running stock turbos at BPU levels. Edited October 11, 2009 by Nic (see edit history)
Kirk
is there anthing i can have done to make it withstand more power. Or is a 6 speed the only way? Get an r154 tranny from a mk3 1jz or soarer
Stephen G
Or from a mk3 supra turbo but you have to change the bell housing.

Not sure what they can handle, but they do have an Achilles heal. http://www.turbosupras.com/pages/pages/technical/R154.htm
AndyT
No. Get the six speed conversion. Keron here does 'em. Centreforce clutch. Job's a good'un.
Terminator
Bite the bullet and fit a V160, they are proven to take far more BHP than they were designed for. Everything else will be a compromise, in the long term it may even be cheaper. Try Jezz.
Kirk
Or from a mk3 supra turbo but you have to change the bell housing. like i said mk3 1jz = correct bellhousing but shifter extention needed soarer = direct drop in achilles heal is 1st gear thrust washer, when abused, comes apart. Simply get the uprated washer and cover from http://www.marlincrawler.com and it will be back to full strength.. Depending on condition can run anywhere up to 700bhp in good condition this was the route i was going to take but deal gone tits up so ive settled for w58 seeming as im NA Edited October 11, 2009 by Kirk (see edit history)
