alex2jz
Greets! Ever since i've got my NA Supra i've noticed that if you sit iddling and move the steering wheel left or right the rpm drops to an uncomfortable level than comes back to normal. I mean it hasn't been a big problem but i wonder if it's normal and if not what could be the cause. Thanks Edited October 11, 2009 by alex2jz (see edit history)
Nic
It's the power assisted steering pump which is putting load on the engine. If it's noisy and dropping the revs excessively, then could be time for a PAS oil change
alex2jz
Thanks Nic! Wanted to do a Power Steering Fluid change for a long time actually if this is what you meant. The steering is smooth and quiet only problem is a the rpm drop.

stevie_b
Just as an aside, "dry steering" where you turn the steering wheel when the car's not moving puts a lot of strain on the steering system (of any car, not just a supra), and should be avoided if you can. Sometimes it's unavoidable of course.

Thanks A part of the power steering system is a small valve that bleeds a small amount of air around the throttle when the power steering is being used. This should have the effect of slightly raising the engine speed if you're using the power steering with the engine at idle. If this is not happening, I would suspect a broken valve / blocked air tube.
