I agree that you burn more calories running/swimming/boxing as they are areobic, but there is no way you'll build the same ammount of muscle from cardio like swimming/boxing/running, compared to lifting weights.

Hence for e.g boxers have a dedicated weight regime, as do most other athletes, cardio actually infringes on muscle building.

Mate... What thread are you in? She's a girl, she doesn't want 12 inch biceps and to be able to lift 100kg? I think you've missed the point

And she wants to loose a stone, not hulk up. was just saying cardio does not build same muscle as weight lifting.

Hence why I was confused at your statement, we we're talking about the difference between heavy weights and low reps compared to lighter weights and many reps... If you wanted to bulk up then it's obvious... anyway

:). And besides i find muscley women attractive, but thats a thread for a different day.

THere was a girl I used to trampoline with now and again when she came down to our club. She was at international level. She was slim, but she had an full on six pack... I was strangely attracted to her for that reason.

On the flip side, there's a girl that works with me. She's a rock climber and has muscles in places most of the people in my office don't have places! :D So unattractive, big shoulders and arms..

Hence why I suggested 12 reps per set and I didn't actually state using 'light' weights - you're right that would be of little benefit.

You'd still need to use something heavy enough to put some stress on the muscle but it would be working the fast twitch fibers - whereas it is predominantly the slow twitch muscle fiber that will build muscle 'mass'; developed with fewer reps of heavier weights.

The key question here is the difference between the scales saying you're a stone lighter or actually dropping a stone of body fat.

I can Help i think??? Iv been in this game ages, so im guessing i know what im doing haha. :D

Claire if you need a diet made up PM me, As Jamsey W has said i helped his Gf lose a stone. Its so simple and easy to do. None of this crash diet stuff, the only way to lose weight is to EAT, YES EAT. And do cardio.

Most of the stuff the guys have said is correct but i do raise an Eyebrow to some of the replies.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about Claire bulking up.

I'm just under the belief that introducing some resistance training into your exercise plan is a good way to aid losing weight as muscle is metabolically active – in other words, it burns calories.

You know a heck of a lot more than the majority on this Geo - is the above right or wrong. I'll gladly hold my hands up if I'm talking a load of Bo**$cks :)

Lifting weights will help build lean muscle mass, which in turn will keep your body's metabolism raised for longer and thus burn more calories (even when not exercising). Your body needs to work and expend energy to support muscle mass, so building more is beneficial.

A combination of weights and cardio is actually the best way to go. Obviously you don't need to get carried away - just 12 reps or so of decent weights, doing a full body body workout 3 times a week would be great.

Workouts should only be 40-50 mins long but keep them intense.

Also, eat 4-6 small meals spread throughout the day. This is also important in keeping your metabolism raised at a time when your consuming fewer calories. Your body's typical reaction would be to react by slowing down your metabolism to hang onto the energy stores it has!

Very Very True mate... Your Metabolism will actually STOP!!!

Too true - you have to keep eating to lose weight! Don't starve yourself as your body will react badly to it.
Correct Also, starving yourself will have more bad health risks for you. This is one thing that really get me going. ''O yeah im losing weight'' Really?? Whats your diet like?? Im not eating.

I can forward you a diet that Geo made for my mrs if you like?

She lost a stone in a month and it's a total breeze. Pm me your' email if you want it.

How is she looking now dude???

You cant build muscle from doing cardio(Period) you will only lose weight if your diet is in check which makes you look like uv built muscle because your so lean.

There is all sorts of theory behind how to attack muscle firbes. You can go heavy for low reps, you can go light for as many reps as you can do, AS long as you Stress the Muscle and of course feed it the correct foods it will grow

A BIG FAT CORRECT dude!!!! :D

Doing some sort of resistance before cardio helps the body Prep for cardio after it. And it more benificial do to this.

You tend to get NO girls doing resistance training due to loads of guys doing weights. I see loads of girls come straight in and hammer cardio, with 0 results in weight loss. Now if they did even a small amout of Resistance training even the BIG rubber bands then hit cardio with a good diet in check, the results would be amazing. :D

thanks a lot guys i'll have to buy a whole new wardrobe when i'm done, i have a gym induction this evening the instructor will go through with me how to use the equipment and stuff .

God iv got a FAT wardrobe and a Skinny Wardrope.

So are you saying that an intensive swim up the pool, hitting the punch bag and / or playing football every week or cycling to work isn't going to increase muscle?

There are people I play football with who have never been to a gym in their life but have muscly legs from playing footy all the time. Cardio in my book. On the same token, the girl I trampolined with had never lifted weights in here life but had a six pack that would put most people's to shame. Like you say, if you're straining the muscles, they're going to react.

i dont want to be muscly or anything i'd like a nice toned body like say britney spears shes a lovely stomach and arms :)

I hope you talking pre-melt down britney! She's a shadow of what she was!

YES i am Matt!!! This will engage fat burning mode, which in turn will make you look like you have good muscly legs, as there lean. If you measured there thighs then after a year of doing the same routine, i bet you they would be the exact same.

Arnie famously worked hard on his legs probably for the same reasons.

Any chance you can give me diet tips please Geo? :)

So what your saying is you can build up decent muscles doing cardio if you have the right genetics, but you can't build up muscle with cardio period? I'm confused

Most people must just have good genetics then. My shoulders are the same, once a week for me, but I've not got the chemical edge though.
