st1989
hey fokes, this is my firsy post. ima ctually asking about my dads supra, im planning on buying it off him. but got a slight problem first..... The car is an import, 1995 spec, and the master warning light is on..... but it only comes on at 90mph? any one got any ideas on this? ive read about it being the brakes, or kmh to mph setup, anyone got a "how to" guide to fixing this? much appreciated, leigh
Nic
Does it have an aftermarket front bumper fitted? If it does then it could be the warning for the stock auto front spoiler. If it has the button for the auto spoiler, try switching it off and see if it still comes up with the warning light. If it's not that, do an error code check, see here http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=35920
st1989
ok thanks mate, i will have a look at it tonight, as far as i know its the standard bumper, you may be able to to tell me? http://i2.bebo.com/049b/17/large/2009/10/05/16/2791091908a11686522533l.jpg
Nic
Yes stock bumper, try turning auto spoiler off anyway to see if it make a difference, if it's not working properly it will show an error light at a certain speed. If it's not that other likely suspect would be either the speed delimiter or the kmh-mph convertor.
stevie_b
If it's not that other likely suspect would be either the speed delimiter or the kmh-mph convertor. My thoughts too, especially if the OP meant 90kph instead of mph. 50mph (90kph ish?) is about the speed that code 42 is triggered. st1989
ok, i havent noticed a switch for the auto spoiler, may just be me being silly! yes well the speedo has been converted, but the mileage is still read in km. there is no limiter on it, as the car has been pushed to high speed. i understand the converter should be under passenger footwell, so i will look at it when i get home. and will check to see if there is the spoiler there. is that a manufacture fitted part? or is it an optional extra? your help is much appreciated guys! Guest Garfy
the switch for the spoiler is infront of the gear shifter, if it has it, I think the posts above are correct, it does sound like a spoiler problem, the way to get around it would be to un plug the spoiler ecu, un till you can find out what the problem is
st1989
since it is automatic there are two buttins, one red for for override of automatic gearbox when engine not runnning. and the second when pressed says "manu" on the dash, dunno what this means... ive checked under the car and cannot see the auto spoiler thing. all thats there is splash gaurds. im going to check for this ecu behind the cd player tonight. but still not sure whether they should all come with this auto spoiler or if its optinal extra? cheers
stevie_b
What are the error codes? This should be your first step.
Nic
Doesn't sound like you have an auto spoiler if you had you would have button for it under the stereo. As Steve says check for stored error codes, see how to guide on my first post.
st1989
ok thanks guys, i will check it out and get back to you's as soon as i can!
st1989
just to let you know, ive took out cd player, and looked behind, all there is is the abs ecu, and a small red box on top? im guessing its not fitted with this spoiler ecu? st1989
ok guys, error code 42, i looped the diagnostics check, came up with 4 flashes pause 2 flashes, so
stevie_b
Very common, see my post #5. Code 42 is usually caused by a faulty speed converter or a faulty odometer unit. Try removing the speed converter (usually behind the dashboard, near the speedo cluster or odo), clear the error and see if it generates it again. I'm guessing that your speed converter's duff. You said that it comes on at 90mph: did you mean that?
st1989
ye it comes on at 90mph, well according to the speedo its 90mph, lol. ye im doing it as we speak, i will find the converter and have a look at it.
st1989
well ive found the speed converter, theres a wee box behind the dials, it says input is kmh and output is mph there is also a grey wire, which is output to ecu, but its not connected to anything? what do you reckon that could mean? it doesnt have a make that i can see on it. also..... i found a greddy turbo meter behind the dash, what exactly is this for? it has on/off switch, a warning light and a little bit for adjusting it. cheers,
AlexKeith
I had the exact same issue with my car. The car was converting the mph right but was still throwing up a warning light. It was something about the car reading two speeds and getting confused. After some pokeing around i found nothing was connected to the ecu. Connect the wire to the ecu (Think it's the pink wire) and it should work properly.
st1989
ahhh ok thats good, the ecu wire is not connected, so will try that just now, i have wiring diagrams for it, so will giv it a bash! thanks,
st1989
oh, btw, i just had a quick look, is there an ecu signal wire from the speedo cables? im a bit stuck with this, its a bit hard to try and read the supra manuals wiring diagrams, haha. the grey ecu output wire from the converter is not connected, im just not sure on what wire it connects to...
