Freakin Idle, Fuel Smell, Check Engine

Hey guys,

yesterday i tried to start my car. It moved for about 10 yards then started to act wierd. No acceleration, revs jiggled, and a wierd noise came from the bottom of my car (aprox. near the downpipe) Also there was a slight smell of fuel + check engine light.

8Hours later i tried to start the car again to move it to a garage... Suddenly everything was fine, engine reving, acceleration and so on.

Today morning the same thing...

Fuel smell, wierd sound from the DP (no sounds at the engine itselft i think), check engine light. Revs are at a constant 1k rpm.

I couldnt read the failure code out yet. (had to go to work asap).

Maybe you could help me out here. Are those commond syndromes?

greets

NA or TT?

From your description, it sounds like it might not have been firing on all 6 cylinders. If it's not firing on one or more of the cylinders it will sound like a bag of hammers, it won't rev and you will get a strong smell of fuel as it gets spat out through the exhaust.

Have you cleaned the car recently and got water in the engine bay? First thing I'd do would be to remove engine cover and check for water around the plugs. Give all the electrics a good spray with WD40.

TT.

Didn´t clean it last days.

But i´ll check for water.

edit: I dont think it could be the cylinders. Thou i would hear it on the engine itself (which i dont).

I just a hear a wierd sound from the hose (near DP)

I was rather expecting that to be a vid of the car running badly, not a flashing light on the dash

Is the noise you hear down low just the engine pinking from low revs/overfuelling? Have you got the first Cat in still, it might be blocking up intermittently? Is yours a euro spec version with a MAF?

Couldnt get a video of the car running badly sorry. (engine was already warm and error didnt occur)

The sound is not the engine changing revs.

But, as my garage found out today, it is definetaly a cylinder not doing his work (if its cold)

It's possible to disconnect the plugs from the injectors without any dismantling, so you can find out which one is the probelm cylinder easily enough. Also you can check if it's always the same cylinder.

Maybe a valve is sticking open - I've heard that before, it runs like a dog, will spit unburnt fuel out the back, and you get a metallic noise as the cam hits the shim bucket every two revs.

Sorry for the hijack, but the same thing happened to me about two weeks ago.

Went to grab a coffe, everything was fine. I left her parked for about 2 hours, and she didn't want to start, revs were jumping around, the check engine light was on, there was a strong smell of fuel and the car had no power.

Oh, and an interesting bit, if i floored it the revs were chunky to about 2500 then normal to approx 3700, then a bit less chunky to 4000. And the revs stopped at 4k just like they would at the limiter :( I'm thinking it's somehow ecu related... Help needed!

Thanks Ian and Chris.

I´ll try that out, hoping that it is not a valve :(

edit: It occured after i tried to ettc. But now everything is stock again. Dont think its the ECU.

That sounds more like ignition timing. Usually something to do with the crank position sensor on its way out i think?

Fitted a new ecu today, thanks to m_life, and it solved the problem.:D:d

I personally think it's very rare, almost unheard of, that the ECu itself goes wrong. I think what you have there is worn pins on the ECU plug. You can refurb them for free although it's a tedious job - try giving the main ECU loom a few good tugs around while the engine it idling, that'll soon show up any loose connections.

I agree Ian, I used to know a fella who had a business repairing ecus back in the days of the Lucas junk in the late eighties. 99% of units he got back in exchange were fine, just unplugging the old unit, spraying the contacts with switch cleaner, and refitting it would have solved the problem. Modern ECU's are very very robust!
