Confused about de-limiter

When i bought my Supra about 3 months ago i was told by the previous owner it had a speedo converter and a delimiter.

So i obviously checked the speedo and it does read in mph, and i also checked the delimiter and it does go above 112.

But my odo still counted up in km, is this possible?

Also, the other day i was giving it some and when i got to about 120 the limiter kicked in! I thought that it might of just been a one off, but ive tried it 3 more times and it is still limited to 120!

Ive also noticed that when i bought the car, sometimes it would idle really low, like 200rpm, but if i restarted the car it would stop. But since the delimiter has stopped working, the low revs havent occured, could this be linked somehow?

Im just really confused about all this now, can anybody help.

I would suggest getting someone to look over it. The limit on these cars is a true 112mph, this will read approx 118-120mph on the speedo. It sounds as if you definitely have the limiter still active.

The issues that you have seem to be related somewhat. You would be better getting a proper diagnostic check so that you can be sure whats going on.

I don't think the de-limiters are software driven, pretty sure they are hardware with resistors doing the work, or something like that. They are basically fudgers lol.

You ideally want someone who knows their way around supra's including the de-limiters. Lots of members on here know these setups inside out, its whether they live local to you or not. Lots of traders on here too if you don't mind a little trip :)

Have a look in the passenger side footwell under the carpet and black plastic panel (undo 3 bolts holding panel), there you will find the ECU (the larger of the 2 metal boxes). If it does have a delimited fitted you should have a box (of some sorts) with wires coming from it that is spliced on the ECU wiring loom. Pic of HKS & GReddy delimiters attached as an example.

Cheers,

Ill have a look around the ECU Nick and get back on here with the results.

There is a black box around the same size as the ones you posted, but this is behind the speedo, so i think this is the speedo converter. The only thing is there are no stickers or words on it so i dont know who made it.

No delimiter connected to the ECU,

I just need to know where the ECU Output wire goes from my speedo converter, so i can see if this is the delimiter.

Have a look here

The products listed have wiring diagrams that should point you in the right direction.

The areas where the delimiter could be spliced in are near the ECU (you've already checked that on Nic's advice), near the odometer and near the speedo dial. Occasionally they are mounted near the gearbox but this is less common.

It's quite possible you have a combined delimiter and speed converter unit. I have one from Thor and it works well. The Thor ones have little stickers on them IIRC to tell you what they are, but others are very anonymous looking, small bits of plastic with 3 or 4 wires coming out of them.

It's normal for the odometer to count up in kms even though your speedo indicates mph. Converting the odo is a separate sub-procedure to converting the speedo. Many people including myself regard converting the odo to be not worth the hassle.

It's nigh-on impossible to debug the converters/delimiters. If you have one and it's not working, the most you can usually do is to check the wires are attached OK. Other than that, you tend to have to bin it and get a replacement. The good ones are very durable though and shouldn't need replacing once fitted properly.

Your symptoms match this scenario: that you have a speed converter fitted, but not a delimiter.

Yeah, well i think i do have a speedo converter and a delimiter in one, because of that wire coming from the unit called "ECU Output".

When i get time ill run this down to the ECU Pink wire on PIn 2 and see if it de-limits.

If not, ill just disconnect it and live with a 112 MPh car until i can be bothered to buy a seperate delimiter.

Cheers for the replies.
