Guest Rays the roof
Managed to snap the connector on my USB memory stick and like a fool do not have a backup. Can the processor be removed and data transferred? PLEASE HELP!
stevie_b
Technically it probably is possible, but I think you'd need hands the size of an ant's penis. Sausage fingers won't cut it. I would try to prise the body of the USB stick open, and see what it looks like inside. You might be lucky, the connector might just clip onto something. Edit: I've just re-read your post, and I think you have to consider the USB stick as being of 2 parts: the plug connector that goes into the computer's USB port, and the fiddly electronics that process and store the data. It's not feasible to separate out any of the chips from the circuit board: they'll be far too tiny (hence my comment above) and will be soldered in place. Go anywhere near those with a domestic soldering iron and the chip will be blown before you have a chance to remove it. So, you'll either need to try and get the electronics out in one piece to fit to another USB stick shell, or fit another connector to your broken USB stick. If it were me, I'd leave the electronics where they are, and try to re-attach the connector or butcher another USB stick for its connector. I don't know much about the inner workings of USB, but I'd guess you'd be looking to re-make 2 electrical connections when you try to re-attach the plug. Willson
I would cut the end off a usb cable and solder that on in place of the broken connector. I also think there are only 2 connections necesary.

Get an old USB cable, cut off the one end and attach the wires to the old stick.
Willson
I am sure I saw a memory stick with a non standard connector. It had a usb connector sized plastic "blade" and two strips of metal on it for the connections. It was a promotional item. edit - fairly sure it was the 2 middle connections which were made, so maybe it had an onboard battery?
JustGav
Nope, definitely 4 They sometimes shorten the middle two, so it has power first before the data pins make connection. http://www.geocities.com/k7hkl_arv/PC_USB_Connectors_Pinout.png
