Playing video files on PC

Is there a decent program out (or that can be updated with codecs) that can play all or most types of video files? I seem to have to use loads of different ones for various different file types.

I currently use PowerDVD for DVD's and Blu-ray disks, Media Player 12 for most avi/mpeg etc, divx for avi's with a separate subtitle file, vlc for MKV's (although they get a big pixelated) and I currently don't have anything that plays the few HD DVD's I have since PowerDVD stopped supporting them.
