michael
Maybe they aren't always innocent at the moment but they soon will be if things go to plan.... bit of an old one this but thought it might spark up some discussion as it's yet another attempted anti-motorist attack from those lovely government advisors. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6841326.ece Apparently making us scared of cyclists will make us all want to ride bikes, if this doesn't work then blanket 20mph limits will make us so bored as drivers that it's potentially more fun and quicker to use a bike that will be able to do 30mph and crash into cars without any blame. Does this seem right? On the plus side... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/in_the_showroom/article6849248.ece
martini
I ride a bike to work every day, but if you make a mistake, it's your fault. Government advisers are pushing for changes in the civil law that will make the most powerful vehicle involved in a collision automatically liable for insurance and compensation purposes. I suppose I am glad I drive an NA at the moment
TonyP
Sounds like this doesn't just apply to cyclists. Government advisers are pushing for changes in the civil law that will make the most powerful vehicle involved in a collision automatically liable for insurance and compensation purposes. Bad news for a lot of people on here! N/A FTW. To me it reads as applying to any collision whether between cyclists, cars, motorcyles, whatever. What a stupid idea. Thorin
Just ban bikes, no more problems with bike vs car incidents then.
martini
Just ban bikes, no more problems with bike vs car incidents then. Or.... people should just bloody pay attention! My friend was ran over and killed a couple of month ago because a van driver didn't look properly I would also say that she should have assumed the van wouldn't see her and would just turn across her anyway - that's how I ride in town. If both people had been more careful then maybe she would be here today, going out in Leeds with me tonight with the rest of my mates. People (cyclists and drivers) are lazy on the roads; and that's when people get hurt or worse.
Class One
Obviously these Govt advisors have never been out recently and seen how some cyclists especially in London fail to observe redlights, oneway streets, give way signs etc. A think that the footway is another lane for cyclists. Lets just make it a free for all for them.
stevie_b
I would be genuinely shocked if that legislation was passed. Ministers are considering making motorists legally responsible for accidents involving cyclists or pedestrians, even if they are not at fault. Preposterous. Cyclists need better cycle lanes, not weird legislation to prove they were "in the right" after an accident. Being proven to be in the right is little consolation if you're drinking through a straw in intensive care having been squashed against a railing by a lorry. MrRalphMan
That's just crazy, I'm gonna have to stop driving at everyone and hoping they will get out of my way now. I ride a bike to work every day, but if you make a mistake, it's your fault. Wow, I know michael can be annoying, but that's a bit harsh. peter richards
like ive said before council spent a fortune on cycle paths but do they use them nope , if they are on the road they pay a tax simple , that way it would go toward the endless accidents they cause
martini
like ive said before council spent a fortune on cycle paths but do they use them nope , if they are on the road they pay a tax simple , that way it would go toward the endless accidents they cause I would hazard a guess that the ratio of stupid:non-stupid people remains the same whether on bikes or in cars. I already pay road tax for my car. I can't drive it whilst I cycle, so why should I pay more road tax for cycling? Should pedestrians pay a tax each time they cross the road? I assume you walk occasionally...!
Nemesis
You'll get Kamikaze cyclists flying at you from all angles, then claiming compo as it was "your" fault. Interesting insurance quote after that.
stevie_b
like ive said before council spent a fortune on cycle paths but do they use them nope But are those cycle lanes actually any use, i.e. do they just last for a couple of hundred yards and then stop? Some cycle lanes hug the left had side of the road all the way up to a junction. Great... unless you want to turn right at the junction on a bike, in which case a cyclist would be better off drifting right when traffic allowed. No cyclist would cycle on roads by choice, not with cars passing you at 30mph or more at a distance of 6 inches.
AndrewOW
As a car driver I hate cyclists, and as a cyclists I hate car drivers & pedestrians, as they all completely ignore me, or are unaware that I'm even there while I'm on the road, and I do stop at red lights and go the right way down one way streets, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Other road users just don't seem to care.

Obviously you have never been out in Leeds/Wakefield recently and seen how some car drivers fail to observe redlights, oneway streets, give way signs, the hard shoulder etc. They think that the footway is just another way of making progress. Lets just make it a free for all for them especially those c***s in mini-cabs. When I used to ride every day I obeyed the rules by god help you if you cut me up. One van driver forced me into the kerb. I caught him in traffic. I think he probably did sh*t himself. I certainly made his son cry.
Snooze
I can't see how legislation like this would be particularly effective. Especially if it only applied to civil actions. All it will succeed in doing is pushing up car insurance prices.

peter richards
sorry for the late reply ive been out for a walk, and unlike 95% of cycleists i waited for the little green man to come on each time i crossed the road, maybe if i wear a multi coloured hat and lycra when im in my van i to can go and do what the fxxx i like , dont think so . ivan
I don't think anything's going to come of this. What's they don't mention is that the 'Government advisors' are just a bunch (of idiots) representing cyclists, not the general public at large. "Cycling England, an agency funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) to promote cycling". Just more looney left ideas that will go straight out the window next election. Abz
I cycle to work sometimes...why I don't do it all the time? Twice I have been hit by cars at close range, one at an empty roundabout (I wear yellow jacket & lights). Once where a nice young lady pulled out of the road without looking to her right! Some cyclists are idiots....true, but don't tar your brush with them all. I had a go at someone the other day when he cut me up & then showed me his two little fingers. Caught him at again at the lights, told him his a twat, he told me I am a faggot cyclist who should try driving & see what its like...I told him you can talk with your BMW E36 318i Saloon with fuck off dents in the passenger side wing & bumper, I drive a twin turbo Supra you FAGGOT! An then calmly rode off... The worst cyclists are the courier ones & the ones who do not drive cars. Here should be the rules for cycling: 1. Anybody who wobbles should not be allowed on the roads. 2. Anyone doing red lights (unless EMPTY Pelican crossing ones, should be fine). 3. If you got no lights on your bike AND light colouring clothes you are off 4. Pavement riders get a £10,000 fine. 5. On the phone & cycling gets you a £10,000 fine. We need to have cycling police... anybody wanting to cycling in London needs to past a simple test & that involves doing a wheelie for about 10 seconds & handbrake turns on your bike, this will show control! colsoop
I cycle regularly and on occasion will perform a daft manouveur on my bike. But as a driver i will also do that (as im sure we all do from time to time) Unfortunately the daft manouveur on a bike has much higher risks of injury than say a car. More people cycle and due to that fact more will get injured. But a study i was reading also suggested that as more people cycle on the roads the safer they become as drivers become more used to dealing with them on a daily basis and reacting to sudden movements or lane changing etc. As a cyclists who drives through town on a regular basis i tend become a bit hardened to the roads due to so many near misses and incidents. This then makes me somewhat aggresive while riding, not to be a cock but to preserve my own well being. That being said hopping up on to pavements and footpaths at full speed and jumping fresh red lights is not on.
tbourner
All it will succeed in doing is pushing up car insurance prices. That's OK, when your renewal is coming up you just take your bike out and drive into the side of someones car waiting at the lights - then claim enough compensation to pay for your insurance.
