SIMON LC
Ok well heres one for you.The TV licencing authority say you are allowed to use a TV that is powered by its own batteries and uses its own arieal under your current home licence (ie one of them handheld jobs) Whats to stop you from using a 12v caravan portable TV and powering it off a 12v car battery in your room.As long is the battery aint being charged while your TV is on,your acting within they're rules. fizzle
how would they know... surely if u ran it through your pc its not actually owning a tv, even if they got in ur room to look they would find anything, just your pc... or you could just watch all your tv via iplayer/4OD etc.. Scott
TV card means you have the capability of watching tv. Thats all they need.

Aero-M
Meh, tv licensing. I didn't have a licence for 2 years when I brought my first place at 19. I have one now but never got caught when I didn't
Geo
What about broadband, and just use the laptop/Pc to download things, technically your not watching Tv, your watching your laptop/Pc screen.
Scott
Can get some pretty large 2.5" hdd's nowadays. Also external hdd's are coming down in price. Could fit a fair bit of stored viewing on a lappy I'm using 50 out of 600, feels like a bit of a waste.
Thorin
If in halls of residence she'll be fine without one, I never heard of anyone being done for not having one while in halls.
martini
TV card means you have the capability of watching tv. Thats all they need. Surely they need to find that. You are allowed to refuse them entry, no?
Jake
The detector vans are also known to target Universities within the first weeks of the term. Detector Vans are a myth. Always have been. Nope, the TV has to be powered solely by its own internal battery/batteries. They don't miss a trick, do they! Still, why should students get away with not paying when the rest of have to? What's this got to do with cars anyway? Edited September 30, 2009 by Jake (see edit history)
Scott
Surely they need to find that. You are allowed to refuse them entry, no? The op asked what was required though. You need a tv license if you have the capability of watching TV, regardless if you hold your foot at the door or not. With your analogy robbing a bank is legal as long as you don't get caught. Non-Supra Technical If it's technical and about cars, but not specific to mkiv Supra's, then it goes here.

I can see what you're saying, but it is a little different. I use iPlayer on my PS3 and that's it anyway

Swampy442
There was an advert in Radio 1 from the license people stating "Be sure, when you go to Uni, to get a TV license if youre watching TV on your laptop" So I guess its fact. Kevan
Sorry to come in late. Easy option, and legal, is to use the catch-up services - iPlayer, 4OD etc. as you don't need a licence. If you are operating equipment capable of receiving live broadcast then you need a licence. So the BBC News 24 online feed requires a licence. A TV card in a PC is undetectable but still illegal to operate without a licence. Bottom line, if you want to watch live TV, pay up! Alternatively, forget TV and get a llife instead.[1] K.
