RobD
I'm watching Discovery atm and they have a programme called "Drift: the sideways craze" , they had a car on there that they were moulding a bodykit onto the car out of expandable foam , this is the third time i've heard of this, is this just a cheap way of doing it or an acceptable way of modding the exterior now? Also the other place i've seen it done where the dash has been moulded also! http://jalopnik.com/5032489/lithuanian-luxury-coupe-mercedes-cl Pretty sure there was a supra on here that was moulded out of expandable foam also! Whats peoples thoughts?
Miguel
Certainly adds to the buoyancy:d
SUPRALOOPY
About four years ago I used expandable foam to toughen up my side skirts. It works well and gives you something to work with if it gets damaged.
Guigsy
nothing like something stiff and expandable under your skirt...
nevins
only time i have heard of something like this is when designing a kit. You use styro foam as it can be sanded and filed to shape, they basically create the bumpers/skirts out of styro foam. This then looks like a foam kit, but then they use these as plugs (male moulds) to lay the fibre glass over to create a split mould. Once they have done this they are left with a female mould which they can re use time after time. I have never heard of a car having foam bumpers yet alone a drift car as the aim of drifting is to reduce the weight of the car.

Kev_A
Can imagine it would be a pain in the arse to profile and get looking anywhere near even and it doens't go off anywhere near as hard as plastic, you could poke your finger straight through it, but it would certainly be lightweight! Thinking on though, surely you'd have to skim it with fibreglass or resin for it stay solid and become a paintable surface?
Matt H
A supra on here's bodykit is made from expandable foam. Edit: I think it's this one: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=151580
