I have a 3.6M 4x4 post that needs to be mounted in the ground to put a dovecote on top of.

I have bought a spike designed for a fence post which im not sure about using. I figured im better concreting the post in.

I cant find an idiots guide anywhere on the net and would like to do it today.

Please find it in your sole to help a moron :)

How do i make sure the pole isnt off slightly? Or will eye straight be ok?

How many bags of concrete will i need? I have one alreay but im assuming that wont be enough.

How wide should i make the hole? Is concrete ok with wood?

Thank J, was hoping you would be up

easy way,

1, get stepson to dig hole 3ft deep

2,get missus to go to b&q and get 2-3 bags of post mix.

3, as she is in town anyway get her to pick up 1 case of beer

4, hold post upright in hole

5, get missus to open a beer

6, get missus to open the bags of post mix and put in hole around post and stomp in while holding post upright

7, send missus to get a watering can of water, (also another beer if required)

8, pour water over dry concrete, (and beer down neck,

9, check post is still upright

10, get missus to bring you a chair and another beer,

11 sit back and admire your hard work with a beer;)

Three feet deep and two feet wide should do it.

And if you don't fancy holding the post use some spare timber to make a brace to hold it by knocking two stakes into the ground, then nailing a plank to each stake and then to the post.

Use a cheap spirit level to set it in position..... only a quid from a pound shop ;)

And Robert is your mother's brother :D

12, Whilst sitting back admiring the post, and fall off your chair drunk, you realise that you forgot the dovecote.

13, Instruct the misses to get the scaffolding and get a beer whilst passing!

Thanks guys :D - havent put the table up as i need to repaint the post (wasnt quite dry and there were loads of bugs that decided to land on the nice white wet paint.)

Ended up doing another 6 inches so was about 27 inches in the end. Took 4 bags of post cement, one of real cement (which was about twice the size of the other bags) and lots of soil to fill the hold back up.

Thanks again, im now going to get a beer as im pooped.

Are you from Pisa originally Pig? ;) A little tip, if digging that twig in sent you giddy don't move to the country where any proper gate posts need replacing or introducing ;)

Seriously though it looks lovely. as does that tree behind it. I'll give you 18 months before you want to shoot the residents though, dirty @#~&$s that they are !

My mum put a dovecote up because she had a couple of doves roosting loose in her garden. That was 2 years ago.

There's over 40 of the damn things now and the patio's permanently caked in cr@p. She has to pressure clean it every day.

They breed like crazy! Im going to have to start limiting some of them soon. :) Its moulting time of year at the moment so there is a right mess. Its ok though, i dont mind.
