Kranz
Three feet deep and two feet wide should do it. And if you don't fancy holding the post use some spare timber to make a brace to hold it by knocking two stakes into the ground, then nailing a plank to each stake and then to the post. Use a cheap spirit level to set it in position..... only a quid from a pound shop And Robert is your mother's brother

Pig
Thanks guys - havent put the table up as i need to repaint the post (wasnt quite dry and there were loads of bugs that decided to land on the nice white wet paint.) Ended up doing another 6 inches so was about 27 inches in the end. Took 4 bags of post cement, one of real cement (which was about twice the size of the other bags) and lots of soil to fill the hold back up. Thanks again, im now going to get a beer as im pooped. ivan
My mum put a dovecote up because she had a couple of doves roosting loose in her garden. That was 2 years ago. There's over 40 of the damn things now and the patio's permanently caked in cr@p. She has to pressure clean it every day.
