New broadband tax to become law before next election.

My Sky broadband in Eastbourne is excellent, and when I call my girlfriend in Hong Kong the signal is amazing, but as mentioned, calling someone locally on a landline or mobile is atrocious most of the time.

Broadband tax. If it's reinvested into the quality of the lines, then fair enough, but the government's got to make some money somehow! ;)

My problem with enforcing a tax on broadband is simply the fact that all these services are provided by PRIVATE companies. I fail to see how public tax is going to benefit, or is it a case of us now subsidising private companies again.

If the tax went into installing public fibre optics which were then leased to consumers/corporate entities then possibly, but I suspect it will just disappear into the coffers and private companies will end up charging us more AGAIN in order to install the infrastructure.

Virgin for instance aren't putting in any new cable to areas which means it is pretty down to BT because last mile hauls are pretty much BTs domain and nobody elses.

In my little utopian environment, I'd like to see communities setting up their own access systems such as wireless and WiMax. Why when houses are built they don't install fibre as part of the essentials services is beyond me, as it would facilitate technology development.

Same here :sly:

I am thinking this now as well. So, I currently don't have a BT line and have an order placed for next week. My internet is with O2 but I haven't started a new contract with them either.

I want to get the internet for my Playstation and also two computers in the apartment - can anyone recommend a method or is a BT line the only way?

they do, it is Southern Ireland. I am in Dublin

also part of the same Bill

Added bonus

• individual rooms within a premises are to be regarded as separate premises for the purpose of television set licensing.

Hope you only have 1 TV, its going to get expensive, TV licence is currently Euro 160 per house soon to be 160 euro per Tv per House

Road tax for me is 1400 Euro, soon to be 2000 euro (Emissions)

Plus they are adding a

  • water charge tax 500 Euro
  • Property Tax for your residence, any other homes you can add 200 on top per additional home

At this RATE, an new tax is getting dreamt up daily
