lexsum
it always amazes me that despite leaps and bounds in technology the sound quality on a landline is as crap as it was 30+ years back. why no sparkling clear tones in this digital age? (yeah i know not exactly on the topic but still)
Whitesupraboy2
i suspect landline via cable / virgin essentially will get 50p charge too. the government wouldnt miss that if it involves some more £££

AndrewOW
My Sky broadband in Eastbourne is excellent, and when I call my girlfriend in Hong Kong the signal is amazing, but as mentioned, calling someone locally on a landline or mobile is atrocious most of the time. Broadband tax. If it's reinvested into the quality of the lines, then fair enough, but the government's got to make some money somehow! JustGav
Broadband tax. If it's reinvested into the quality of the lines, then fair enough, but the government's got to make some money somehow! My problem with enforcing a tax on broadband is simply the fact that all these services are provided by PRIVATE companies. I fail to see how public tax is going to benefit, or is it a case of us now subsidising private companies again. If the tax went into installing public fibre optics which were then leased to consumers/corporate entities then possibly, but I suspect it will just disappear into the coffers and private companies will end up charging us more AGAIN in order to install the infrastructure. Virgin for instance aren't putting in any new cable to areas which means it is pretty down to BT because last mile hauls are pretty much BTs domain and nobody elses. In my little utopian environment, I'd like to see communities setting up their own access systems such as wireless and WiMax. Why when houses are built they don't install fibre as part of the essentials services is beyond me, as it would facilitate technology development. martini
Same here I am thinking this now as well. So, I currently don't have a BT line and have an order placed for next week. My internet is with O2 but I haven't started a new contract with them either. I want to get the internet for my Playstation and also two computers in the apartment - can anyone recommend a method or is a BT line the only way? Bobbeh
This is crap, why do we have to pay for BT to fibre everyone's home when NTL/TW nearly went bust having to pay for it themselves.. People on cable shouldn't have to fit the bill for everyone else
MrRalphMan
TBH BT didn't BT offer to fibre the country back in the 80's for a monopoly in distributing media across it and were turned down by the Government, why should they do it now when they would be forced to open those lines up to other companies..
