AJI
So the question is, Who is the most interesting member of your family, past or present? Interesting can be in your own terms of interpretation. For me I think it has to be my grandad. He was a Lancaster bomber pilot who did a full tour of boming various parts of Germany and the like. After his tour he then worked on the UK's nuclear threat projects, and still today none of our family knows what this work was to any degree of accuracy as it is still 'classified'. As a sideline section of work he was also involved in unmanned aircraft projects for the airforce. (And this was back in the late 70's!) After he retired from the forces he commissioned two nuclear power stations in the UK and went on to lecture about nuclear technology at various universities in England. I only met him twice before he died when I was young, but he definitely had an involved carreer!

Animal
Mine would have to be my great great great Grandad, Lancelot 'Lanty' Slee, a notorious moonshiner in Cumberland. He had a variety of stills dotted about the Lake District. http://www.nicholson.u-net.com/thieves.htm The whiskey, made with large quantities of potato starch, was real “hot-stuff,” and anyone who got “tight” on it was generally incapacitated for several days. Charlotte
This is a hard question, because loads of them are really interesting! My great great grandmother wrote poems for queen victoria, like her personal poet thingy. My cousin is a scentist bloke that goes trekking in the jungle looking for new species of plant life. My brother used to be a chorister for the King College choir and has toured the world singing - including for the pope and at Tamara Beckwith's wedding (yawn). There's loads more but I won't bore you. As you say it's all personal interpretation of what's interesting.

Thats amazing - My Grandfather (still alive now ) was also a Lancaster bomber air man - he was the front gunner and also bomb aimer on missions. He flew a full tour out duty from a Lincolnshire air base. I have herd more stories and seen more medals over the years - some stories I don’t like to think about , not even repeat - a VERY brave man (no choice i spose). Night bombing runs and even some daylight sessions. I am extremely proud of him . I recently went to watch one of the worlds 2 last remaining flying Lancaster bombers take off from RAF Coningsby - amazing sight nothing like the sound of those engines. I have a Lancaster bomber picture on my desktop right now. I plan to make a flying model one day Where did your Grandfather fly from? Do you know his squadron details

tooley
its quite funny when both my grandads meet as one was in the luftwaffe and the other a on the ground with montgommery in ejypt the stories both of them come out with are amazing and yet painful at the same time with some harrowing accounts of deaths. i think id have to choose my german one though as after he was shot down over the uk his stories of his bomb disposal work in the uk and detailed info of where he knows some bombs still are due to them being too dangerous to get out are pretty scary

AJI
Where did your Grandfather fly from? Do you know his squadron details I found a website a number of months ago which had a picture of him standing in front of a training conversion Lancaster just after he qualified to fly them. http://www.lancaster-archive.com/aircrew-photos.htm (I also have this pic as an original at home). He flew out of a number of bases around the southern half of England, two of them being RAF Marham and RAF Mildenhall.

Blackie
My auntie traced our family tree back to the 1700's, We had a Highwayman called Jack shepherd, He used to knock about with Dick turpin and when he was finally arrested and sent to Stockwell prison instead of becoming a normal prisoner he had "Perks" for torturing other prisoners, Quite interesting.
