VXR Astra Racing Edition - Opinions please :)

Scotts discussion (whilst interesting) is pretty irrelevant. I don't plan to drag race, race evos or really chase Vectras... i am looking for a hot hatch which is new enough not to need to MOT it.

Sorry for going O/T, bullshit always makes me bite :D

Have you had a look at the 888 Diesel Astra?

Can't be beat IMO. Will stick to a VXR off the line and has more torque mid-range. Has lots of nice kit etc on as standard.

Its the one i would go for if i was in your positions. I like sporty diesels though, completely effortless to drive.

It was the most interesting part of the thread for most users of the forum I suspect!

Cheers mate. I will consider this.

Megane 250GT. Just drive one. The Astra won't look so good then.

Will consider it... never did like the French though.

I dont think the vxr's look too bad, not my kettle of fish though, i'd sell the n/a & buy a small runabouta tt for weekends(or something interesting& quick),would'nt that be cheaper outlay (initially at least)or did i miss something, oh yeah u other half nicked your trousers:) as for the ride in the Supe, they're fine with standard alloys on.

Getting in and out the TT might be the issue. Its a LOW car.

the new vxr isnt being released until 2011 apparently

HI guys,

Thanks for the posts.

I went and test drove the Astra VXR racing tonight.... Stupidly fast... Anyone who claims otherwise clearly hasn't driven one.

My main gripe is that whilst the Type R Civic make lots of noise (which makes you feel you are in a sporty car) the Astra just catapults you into next week without so much as a grunt. It was like a gun exploding without a bang... not very satisfying. I also found the dash board rather dated.

what did you find dated about the dash? was it the orange colored LED's?

as for the grunt you need to stick on either a remus exhaust (same one that comes on the nurburgring edition) or the piper full system then you will get plenty of grunt with some nice bangs/pops on gear change, at first you think the pops are stupid but after a while you get a childish grin everytime it goes ;)

Yellow LEDs didn't help no. Compare it to the Type Rs or other ranges and it looks dated.

How much are you looking at for the exhaust systems? The car is £16500 as it is, I kinda expected to be impressed from the off.

remember the vxr is older than the other models so it will be a bit more dated, theres a chap over on the forum that i suggested who does an LED conversion, 3 gauge dash pod etc which can brighten it up a bit added with a double din unit does look quite smart.

hmm the exhausts vary, you could probably pick up a second hand remus off the forum (i'll have a quick check for you) as a lot of people are swapping to the new piper (wider diameter than remus) but with the piper you have options so the louder you want it the less it will cost, i think full system with 2 silencers and a sports cat is £999, with 1 silencer and a sports cat £899 or if your really brave 0 silencers and a sports cat £799, there is a decat option with all these which again is cheaper but a remap is then needed as it will throw up a management light, the remus only has one option and comes in at £995 so really the piper is your best bet and you will get the better gains from it

vauxhall used to offer the remus as part of an upgrade package, but if i remember correctly the company (vxpc) who supplied VX with the remus went bust or so i heard so i dont know how available the remus from vauxhall is? might be worth speaking to your salesman at the garage see if 1. they have any available and 2. what kinda deal he can do with the car if you wanted one put on as it may be cheaper still than buying a piper system, depends if your bothered about the extra performance from the piper over the remus or just a sporty sound sound, if its sound your after then a downpipe and a filter would porbably help ;)

a bit long winded but i hope this helps
