Erratic Idle and high Fuel consumption ???

ok I am at a loss here !! ...I am getting the revs jump up and down between 200 - 1000 erraticly , and occasional Juddering at speed , and when stepping down there is suttle but evident black and sometimes white puffs of smoke from the exhaust (white at idle but black when giving a quick step down burst on the pedal). an now I've noticed my MPG has almost tripled ???

:badidea::sos::sos:

The only change I made before this happened was the air filter and the new one sucks in more air than the old one did , before I go changing this back could anyone confirm what could be causing this ?

I am guessing that my fuel / Air mixture is not right

Could this possibly be the o2/lambda sensor maybe

not sure , could that really cause all three symptoms ? smoke , erratic idle and extremely high MPG ?

Have you seen this thread?:

I came across it searching into my latest issue. Does your rev counter jump around like this?

Sorry to hear about your issue , sounds more intricate than mine .

to answer your question , it does , but more often than that and generally when the car has warmed up after about say 5 mins

it's a N/a...but could it be coincedence that it happened after I changed the Air filter ? ( wasn't straight after was about a day later )

Seems unlikely to be a coincidence, if you think about it.Have you removed the stock airbox for an after market? Did you disconnect the sensor behind the panel filter?

Faulty or sticking ICV causes the problems you describe. Remove, clean with brake cleaner, re-fit, and all should be well, if thats your problem:)

nope the stock box had been removed and replaced with the induction system by the previous owner , all I replaced was the cone filter with a similar cone one ...yes I did disconnect the sensor from the air pipe but I did make sure I plugged it back securely....I'm wondering even if I did swap back the old filter It would'nt necessarily fix my problem would it ? if the damage has been done so to speak !...just thinking out loud...:(

Just clutching at straws here but try resetting ecu to remove any possible fault codes. Also try what supranature suggests i.e ICV cleaning.

will do ....sounds an easy enough job to remove the ICV from the manifold and I'll give it a good clean with some brake cleaner , just worried it's the o2 sensor , reckon there not cheap !...

Thanks to all for your help and input , i'll let you know how I get on :salute:

If I recall from pics I've seen, there is a whole tube assembly dedicated to the MAF sensor isn't there? Is it possible you put it back facing the wrong direction? Got any pictures of the install?

ok , i just noticed the possible culprit ...the small hose at the rear near the manifold area which is attatched to the SENSOR ASSY VACUUM unit has broken off and cannot be re attatched because the plastic connector has snapped off !......I dare say this is the reason for my problems ...but looks like I nee a new nut/connector assembly ...is this an item that can be bought from Toyota ?...
