AJI
Last night I was watching the video content on the Playstation3 with GT5-Prologue. It was on about the design concept behind the new R35 GT-R and the EVO X and how it creates a new interaction between driver and machine. Basically this new interaction is just the computer screen in the GT-R that tells you what the car is doing and a record how it is performing etc. Not really an interaction as you can't really use recorded data in this way to instantly modify your driving or improve your driving. I mean you can try something and then stop driving and take a look at what you did. Then try something else and again take a look at what you did...but is this a 'new' driver-machine interaction as they were trying to convey? You can only really improve on your driving if you can interperate the recorded data correctly as you'd be able to note that for example you went into a corner too fast and too much on the brake and the front end understeered slightly, I'm guessing the car could record that and then you'd look at this later and think, 'ah yeah, ok, so I'll brake earlier and slow down more for that corner'. But this in not a realtime interaction whereby the driver gets a feeling of what is going 'wrong' and is then 'educated' and shown what is correct. As for the EVO X and it's all new computerized power delivery and braking sysytem on each individual wheel.... well this, as they were trying to get across, will not really improve driving skill at all. This is because the computer is doing all the adjusting and correcting the driving behaviour. The common driver, time after time, will usually be doing all manor of things and the computer will 'normalise' this into the same result on each corner. Thus the driver has no idea what is 'better' or 'worse' than the previous attempt. What is worrying though is that this could be the future of all cars. Driver aids might be standard on everything in the future and the 'fun' and skill of car control will be completely taken away. It may be the case that you pay a premium on cars that do not have driver aids. (May even become a legal requirement in the future like little black boxes reporting on your speed and whereabouts). Was just wondering other people's opinions on these subjects? Anyone else seen the GT-TV content on the PS3?
imi
Seen the said videos. If such driving aids make driving safer then I am all for it. Nothing new about driver aids, before all this intelligent 4-wheel braking, front / rear power distribution, etc we had TV, ABS, etc...... As for the purist; if there was a way to switch all of this off on a track, then its the best of both worlds. even F1 drivers use driver aids.....drive a automatic FFS

I agree to some extent, I do wonder how kids would cope having only driven cars with ABS if they have to brake suddenly in a car that doesn't have it.
