IceMan
straightforward question: when should the Overdrive button be pressed in? I know it adds 4th gear and improves fuel consumption, but will it harm fuel consumption at low speed/revs? Obviously on the motorway it's essential but elsewhere? How do you other Supra owners drive? How about using L and 2 in everyday driving? Just wondering as I keep becoming button-switching-man! Adam_SG
I leave it in on straight roads and depress it ( to drop me to third ) for a little extra boost to get me above the 4,000 revs mark and turbo 2. I must admit i do use it a lot but i tend not to use first or second manually very often. So ur gonna be button switching man for ever and ever! Just like me
Barry
I never use L, well, unless I'm in MANU mode and want a quick getaway. I use OD when I'm sitting at a constant speed, even if its just 30mph. Then I hardly even have to touch the throttle as its only sitting at about 1200rpm. If I'm stopping and starting in traffic then I just use 2 & D.
Justin
I have OD off for chicane work. It keeps up the revs round those tight bends. When I want to nail someone on sraights I keep OD on as I find that at top end speeds you need 4th. I tried messing with L and 2 but cant really say I'm any good at driving in that way. I will put it in L if I want to do a doughnut but that's about it. But hey I'm no Schumacher and each to his own. As for drag racing tomorrow (never done it before) do people think it is best to turn off slip control for a launch? J:flame Dev
Terminator
When I am in normal everyday mode I just use D on the open road and let the box to the work it was designed to do. I switch off OD to give a bit more engine braking and for twisty bits. In built up areas I mainly leave OD off if the journey is stop start, if the traffic is flowing I will switch OD on and off as required. In long traffic ques and jams I use MANU mode and first to give engine braking in slow traffic. If I want a bit more getaway power I will use second with OD off so I can keep the revs higher in third. Also change down to second if I want a fairly quick exit from roundabouts When I want to drive hard I use MANU and use first, second and third and keep the revs up high to keep the boost from the second turbo on line. Got to be quick to get second as it is easy to go over the red line and hit the limiter. But for the top end speeds fourth is required. I have to admit to being a button presser. THOR Racing
I concur 100% with Terminator. If I want a bit more getaway power I will use second with OD off so I can keep the revs higher in third. Also change down to second if I want a fairly quick exit from roundabouts I have to admit to being a button presser. I've done nearly 100K miles button pressing and pushing the lever up and down to my hearts content and not a problem with the gearbox. It's a tough beast. Drive it the way that suits you. There is no rule book. Pete
Doug
Do you lift off the throttle in between changing gears manually?
Terminator
Originally posted by Doug Do you lift off the throttle in between changing gears manually? Yes, just a very quick lift to reduce torque to the converter. AFAIK in normal mode the computer alters quite a few engine functions to reduce pressure on the converter. The use of MANU disables this protection, but does give faster changes.
Doug
Oh ok, thanks for that. I might try this MANU gizmo at some stage. But it all seems a bit too technical.
MONKEYmark
at drag strip at york i have standard traction off so the snow button dont kick in and use it in manu mode and overdrive off so all light lit on dash.hold it on brake in first build revs to 2k then floor it at elvington tried something different in wet standard traction off .race logic on wet setting, and in low gear then hold at 2k then floor it, got some good starts earlier on.never used manu mode once or overdrive button and get my best ever time on strip.so will be using that way in future also on normal road i like it in drive then floor it and get kick down seems to fly like that.use over drive off and man u mode in 2nd for driving through little villages at wot to cause a bit of blitz havoc pah who needs a manual
