Hows about an NSX? You should be able to get a good one for the money, and there's plenty of Autos around. Just watch for those suspension bushes!

Otherwise, i'd be thinking Aston DB7 (I could live with the running costs for the looks alone), Jag XK, Volkswagen Corrado VR6 Storm (You could get a very nice low mileage one for £6-7k).

As a wildcard, i'd maybe look at a Mazda Eunos Cosmo, although I hear they're rather thirsty (due to the 3 rotor 20B rotary engine)

It has to be one of those cars that makes you stop and stare, it is not always the super expensive so I like your train of thought, my 2K Camaro used to pull a crowd at times, a bit "basic" however as a driving experience

A looked after 928 especially the later cars are lovely. Its one of my all time favourite Porsches and one that I looked into before the Supra. Poorly detailed service histories (just mainly stamped books, no invoices or just straight oil & filters change) didn't give me much confidence.

I think, you have a lovely purchase, provided its a genuine clean car and you aim to maintain it that way then you should be smiling for a long time

Its not worth a look then Chris ?

Possibly, but the Renault box would worry me, it will be on the ragged edge if the engine is producing the torque it should, and the thing has any meaningful traction. You have now swerved towards hard core, probably rather temperamental manual boxes! :)

These sorts of things are only as good as the man who screwed them together and the sum of their constituent parts. Some look fabulous but probably wouldn't get you to the pub. Some look as rough as a bear's arse, but could win an endurance race :)

Had a good chat with her indoors and she is happy to have a cheap run around which means I can go for a manual which opens up a lot more possibilities, including some real unusual stuff

Agree it looks nice but I would need an independant inspection on stuff like this, would not buy blind :)
