Matt H
Dan Brown's new book is launched today. Has anyone gone out to buy it yet? I'm going to pop out at lunch, so just wondering if anyone knows of any shops that are doing any good deals? I hate the way they release books in hardback form first to make the extra pennies before the paper version is released.
ellis
Not got it yet - looking forward to getting it later! Will have it read by the morning!!
michael
It's £9.49 at Asda, WH Smith, Waterstones and Tesco apparently. I hate the way they release books in hardback form first to make the extra pennies before the paper version is released. Why not wait until the paperback then? Matt H
Why not wait until the paperback then? Waiting would be the operative word there. Such written goodness means I must subject myself to a hard-one

Matt H
is this the one thats gona supposedly upset a few religious oddballs? It focuses around the Freemasons I believe. I doubt they will be very happy. Altough I've not read too much about it as I don't want to spoil it. I think the sh!t will really hit the fan if he ever writes a book focusing on Islam. It would probably get him killed. At least his current subjects wouldn't revert to murder!
Scott
just download the pdf and buy the book later if you feel guilty lol. Must.....resist.....subjection.....to.....hard-one.... comment
Thorin
It'll be the same template as the others, the ambitious bad guy, the intellectual dark haired woman, an initially good guy character who is not who he seems, probably a character with a disability, and an improbable race against time. It sells him books though, personally I think he's a terrible writer.
RiceRocket
£5-9 between the supermarkets Plus Tesco are selling the Angels & Demons dvd for £8 when you spend £18 in-store.

But as for how he unfolds the storys, coupled with the intrigue of the finer details (religious / maths stuff etc), makes him a great writer. £5-9 between the supermarkets Plus Tesco are selling the Angels & Demons dvd for £8 when you spend £18 in-store. £5 at asda wow. Just bought my copy from HMV for a tenner as tesco didn't have any in. That's a bargain
RedM
Dan Brown is crap! Below is a section of a review of the (bloody awful) Da Vinci code. It's cruel but fair. Below are five passages I've quoted, minus the character names; two from the Code and three are not. See if you can tell which were written Dan Brown, and which weren't (answers below): 1) They walked past the huge multicolored and vaguely anthropomorphic metal sculpture that stood guard outside the station area. The sculpture always reminded [her] of how she felt after a heavy weekend: split into pieces, one eye by her toes, the other perched on her ear. 2) She was moving down the corridor toward them with a long, fluid strides… a haunting certainty to her gait. Dressed casually in a knee-length, cream-colored Irish sweater over black leggings, she was attractive and looked to be about thirty. Her thick burgundy hair fell unstyled to her shoulders, framing the warmth of her face. Unlike the waifish, cookie-cutter blondes that adorned Harvard dorm walls, this woman was healthy with an unembellished beauty and genuineness that radiated a striking personal confidence. 3) He relished the unaccustomed silence of the country and the privacy which the garden afforded. It was large, partly walled, and the remainder enclosed by a tangled hedge bordering fields that undulated from down to the village somewhere below. Wild and overgrown though it was, the garden had transmuted neglect into beauty: clematis and honeysuckle toppling over the crumbling brick walls and a confusion of rampant ivy threatening to smother the orchard. 4) Two minutes later she was creeping out of the open front door and heading for the path toward the stables. To the left of the gazebo, a heavy iron gate guarded the entrance to the grotto. She'd never been there- it had always been too overgrown- but she'd heard the gardeners clipping it back on her first morning… A quick examination confirmed that the padlock was missing. [she] brushed the orange flakes of rust from her fingers and gave the gate a shove. It swung open with an eerie creak. 5) Perfect. Now all that remained was to close and lock the door. Leaving the box on the ground for a moment, he grabbed the metal door and began to heave it closed. As the door swung past him, [he] reached up to grab the single bolt that needed to be slid into place. The door closed with a thud, and [he] quickly grabbed the bolt, pulling it to the left. The bolt slid a few inches and crunched to an unexpected halt, not lining up with its sleeve. Paragraphs two and five, above, were both taken from The Da Vinci Code. The first, third and fourth paragraphs are taken from the following: Cheap Trick, by Astrid Fox (Black Lace, 2001); The Reckoning, by Anonymous (Blue Moon, 1998); A Gentleman's Wager, by Madelynne Ellis (Black Lace 2003). As you might have gathered, those last three are soft-core porn paperbacks; Astrid Fox' and Madelynne Ellis are most likely pseudonymns for writers who realized that Anonymous was already taken (is it me, or does Astrid Fox sound like some female superhero's alter ego?). Animal
So are you (via cut & paste) suggesting that Dan Brown writes porn novels under pseudonyms?
RedM
So are you (via cut & paste) suggesting that Dan Brown writes porn novels under pseudonyms? He doesn't but really, it'd be no great stretch for a writer of such meagre talent.

AndrewOW
I've read through to to Chapter 18 and I'm hooked. Very good so far. That sounds like some decent progress you're making there, but it's probably only page 18 anyway! Well, it's setting all kinds of records according to the Beeb: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8260067.stm
Matt H
That sounds like some decent progress you're making there, but it's probably only page 18 anyway! The chapters are relatively quite short. That's Dan's style though, switching between the two characters in focus quite rapidly. Excellent twist in the early stages though; not quite convienced about this noetic science stuff, which gets an apparent nod to authenticity in the early stages. Still, that could all change though as the story progresses.
ivan
[snip] personally I think he's a terrible writer. Dan Brown's writing Thank goodness - it's not just me that can't stand his books then. He's one of those authors who writes a script, as if he's uber-confident that it'll be made into a film. Can't abide that sort.
