carl0s
I can see a few hex-bolts, but not a regular 14 - 17mm bolt anywhere. What should I be removing? thanks
carl0s
so far i've got "top plug on the diff" from searches
carl0s
oh feck it. It's got to be the hex plug just above the centre of the diff.. here goes

carl0s
here we go.. i'm finally using my head now: The top plug is used for checking the level and filling. The bottom plug is used for draining. Right? Now why didn't I think of that before
carl0s
oh great if the top plug (just *below* the centre of the diff) is for checking the level, then how come a quarter of a litre of oil has just pissed out all over my driveway ? at least I know the diff *wasn't* dry.. carl0s
well I'm just gonna hope this is all okay. I had the holes correct - as per the Manual resource on mkiv.com. I kind of forced ~300ml of oil in there as quick as I could (squeezing the bottle) and got the plug back in as fast as i could while it was pouring back out. I'm a little surprised no one has been able to help with this, seeing as quite a few people on here must have drained / topped up their diffs before. I mean, the question is pretty simple - should oil start pissing out as soon as you remove the top filling-plug or is something wrong? merckx
I mean, the question is pretty simple - should oil start pissing out as soon as you remove the top filling-plug or is something wrong? This might be an obvious point, but did you have the car level?
carl0s
This might be an obvious point, but did you have the car level? I did consider this. First time round I had the car jacked up *from* the rear diff. Second time round I jacked it up from the driverside rear suspension, so it was angled away from the filling hole.
