adam1983
How long do you have to leave your TT to idle for before turning off to let the turbos cool down? I was looking at getting a turbo timer but im not too keen on the idea of leaving the engine running whilst im not there and dont want it to interfere with the alarm system. I dont really mind too much sitting in my car for a short time whilst its cooling down. Cheers for any help
tooquicktostop
I just used to coast home for the last mile or so off boost and switch off when stopped
Chris Wilson
Likewise, just do the last 1/2 mile on little or no boost and just turn it off.
MrDriver
I turn it off almost immediatly after stopping. Only if I drove it very fast I keep it running for a minute or so. P-
Guigsy
right when i stop. but then i live in the middle of town. so if i was running on boost right up to my soorsetep i would probably be in prison by now... turbo timers are a bit of a waste imo. I only ever use mine (which is on the alarm) at the track/strip so i can go off and get a buttie without leaving my keys in the car
adam1983
Cheers guys thanks for the advice. Guess i will have to spend the money on something else instead of a turbo timer then
AndrewOW
I use my turbo timer from time to time depending on what I've been doing, but it doesn't interfere with the alarm, as I can lock it all up and walk away knowing it's safe to do so. I do get some odd glances from people thinking I've just left it running there! EDIT: I don't think this is particularly 'legal' to do, but this is in my driveway off a reasonably busy road, and it's off by the time I get indoors anyway. a98pmalcolm
i calmly drive through my village back to my house and have the timer set to 30 secs then when it stoped press the lock on the fob...works in the house
James
Usually a couple of mins of light, off boost driving before turning off. I watch my oil temp gauge and usually let it cool back to

paul mac
stay of boost for a little longer then half a mile. more like 2-3 miles switch of when home thats more like it, or better still with the money you have saved on a turbo timer buy something usefull and fit an oil temp gauge, then you know exactly how long you need to cruise before shutting the engine down
Homer
Stock turbo's have water cooled cartridges so little cool down time is needed, as Chris says, half a mile is fine after some spirited driving. The water cooling helps cool the bearing *after* the turbo has stopped. For those without water cooled turbo's then yes, additional cool down time is required before turning the engine off. The manual doesn't say anything about cool down times IIRC.
