iPod 5th Gen - No Sound

Well I've had this iPod for almost 3 years now without no problems, until yesterday.

I went to play music through the iPod dock in the car but instead of my music I was greeted with a large cracking and squeeking noise. Firstly, I thought my speakers were buggered (although they're only a few months old).

So I took it out and tried some headphones....same result :(

Later, after a few resets etc. there appears to be no sound whatsoever through the headphone jack or through the docking port, however it still plays fine through iTunes???

After reading online about this problem someone suggested dodgy connectors and recommended putting it in the fridge to allow them to contract, it worked....for 5 seconds...:(

Then, after more reading. A guy on the Apple forum stated that Apple are aware of this problem and it is a common 'Manufacturer Defect', and that the sound can be breifly restored whilst applying a large amount of pressure to the bottom right hand corner of the iPod. There also appears to be a large number of consumers who have also faced this problem, each of them (regardless inside or outside of the warranty) receiving a free replacement iPod. Sounds good eh? However, all of these posts are from Americans...I searched but couldn't find a British response.

But, I called them nevertheless but all they said was,

"yes it's a common fault with your type of iPod, take it to a store and have them look at it for you. I can't guarantee it, but the may give you a free repair."

Hmm, it's better than nothing, but shouldn't the same precidents be followed whether it's the U.K. or the U.S? Same company right? Well, atleast they've acknowledged there's a 'common fault', but what I'm wondering is due to it being out of Warranty how likely am I to get a free replacement?

Furthermore, anybody had or know of this problem?

Thanks For reading ;)

  • 1 month later...

Just spoke to Apple Customer Service again on the phone after a failed attempt at the Apple Store due to them being 'unaware' of any type of problem with my type of iPod.

After about 45 mins on the phone and me advising the CS Agent to look further into Apple's reports he finally found an Apple Acknowledgement report stating that there was a large batch of my type of iPod (5th Generation) that would halt any audio output through both headphone jack and docking port. They have noted it down as a manufacturing defect.

So, they have admitted there is a problem and I have just received an e-mail stating I should be receiving a UPS care package to send my iPod off for an Out-of-Warranty repair/exchange. So, after about a month it should be resolved soon, not bad for an iPod with a Warranty that ran out 'over 635 days ago' - I'm just glad they can admit they're not a perfect company :D
