M3 insurance?

Damn expensive to run. If you don't need the extra rear or boot space I'd recommend sticking with a Supra!

I know!......

Just spent £1200 on mine this month!:(

Wheel bearings £180 EACH

Tyres x2 ps2.....£440

Brake discs/pads £300....and a few other bits and pieces!

Problem is most the bits are dealer only parts and u pay the M tax on them. Just the front wishbones are approx £850 for the pair fitted and a steering rack £2500!

Parts are expensive but generally they are very reliable and i'm on my second e46 m3 now.

Never the less great all round cars and worth every penny of it!

Is that price fitted at a main dealer? Mine needed a front wishbone (don't they all) I think it was £300 from an Indy.

Apart from the Springs. And Wishbones. And ARBs. And Alternators :D

What one have you got now?

great all round cars

Yeah, I really like them too. Apart from the piss-poor brakes they are really nice to drive hard.

I'm looking at buying an M3 at the moment, the best quote's i've had so far are £601 full comp with a £300 excess, or £518 third party fire and theft with a £450 excess. To have the extra cover given for the full comp added to the tpft quote would take the premium above that of the full comp to begin with :Pling: .

Does the reliability go down hill after 60k ?, there is a big differance in the warrenty cover qouted in this thread for before and after that mileage.

I hope you're ready for the name calling an gesticular waving if you get one. ;)

I've had 2 E46 M3 SMG's. Never had a problem with either of them. Saying that they where both low milage, but I did drive them like I stole them :D They used less juice than the Supra, and were cheaper to insure by £150.

I'm actually contemplating getting another and putting an HPF turbo kit on it.:flame:

I'm used to that, I get that even when i'm not driving :D .

Hope you're well Mig, long time no see. When you gonna take me out for a ride in the porker ? .

I'm good mate, you? I'll take you out for a ride anytime you want lover;)

As for BMW PPI. Lind/Coopers/Arden, whatever they call themselves this week, will check whatever you want them to. Charge you for it mind you. I don't think they will guarantee the findings of the test over a certain age though. Best give them or Tunbridge a ring. Ask for Grant in 2nd hand car sales over at Lind/Coopers/Arden or just go to the Service department.

Yes thats main dealer prices and the wheel bearings are plus labour as thats just what they cost.

Mine were done at a indy so saves a fair bit but on cost/labour.

I bought another carbon black/red leather manual but this time made sure i have every extra including HK/sunroof/heated seats etc.

Mine is pretty much stock apart from H&R springs, axiss ULTpads and some AC schnitzer pedals etc.

Stock brakes are a let down but apart from that great all round cars.

P.S have u checked your bootfloor for cracking near subframe mounts?

Sounds like you got the perfect one for you. It's funny how people's tastes differ though; I'm not fussed on HK, Sunroofs or heated seats and I dislike red leather interiors. Still, it'd be a boring world ... etc etc

Yeah, it had a full inspection last month. I don't think it's a common problem anyway, is it?

Not according to BMW in the States, I don't see what the same should not apply here.

I know they lost the case and BMW NA were ordered to re-imburse people who had paid themselves to get it repaired and fix any car under 10 yrs old.

Repair takes 3-4 weeks and costs approx 3-4k per car so bmw try to wiggle out of it if u have modified bits like bushes, springs, slick tyres etc.

Anyway know someone who has it and has had bmw dealer take pics of crack, just waiting for authorisation from head office to go ahead and will see if they refuse.

Its starting to become more common as people start to check for it.

U wont really know its cracked unless it gets really bad and that could take ages.

  • 3 months later...

Blimey, is this thread still going!

I've still got my M3. It still seems to be costing me for something every month.

So far...

2x Rear tyres ......................... £530

Oil and filter Service ................ £205

New alternator +

Broken spring +

Worn out front wishbone +

Rear trailing arm bushes +

Mot ................................... £1389

(inc £60 to fix blown number plate bulb!)

Inspection II service

at Main Dealer ...................... £850

Set of stock wheels (used) ..... £500

AP brake upgrade.................. £1900

Refurb/Powder coat wheels ..... £300

Stock rear brakes .................. £350

Retrofit stock Nav/TV gear....... £300

(not fitted)

More tyres last month ............ £500

A lot of the above aren't things I had to buy. I could've saved some money by sticking with the standard brakes (although they are quite poor) and not bothering with the OEM Sat Nav (which is rubbish anyway, to be honest).

The servicing cost isn't all that bad really. OK, it's ~£200 for an oil service but then it doesn't need servicing again for 12,500-15,000 miles. The Inspection I or II services are only every 25-30k miles.

Plenty of you guys on here spend similar amounts running a Supra.

  • 1 year later...

Im new to the forum and after owning an E46 M3 before the Supra I have to say the running costs are crazy.....seriously think before buying one!!

I was having to keep a £500 kitty every month just for the car!!

Every month something went wrong!! and I had a low mileage just 42000 miles 53 reg M3

Xenon failed new xenon headlight was £370

Auto leveling of headlights failed shortly after £210

Alternator went £470

Warped discs £400

SMG pumps have issues mine was playing up as it wouldnt select 1st gear at times and sometimes wouldnt move to 0 for me to start the car!!

I sold it shortly after this as SMG pumps are 2k to replace!!

Inspection 2 services are £800 at dealers about £500 at indy!!!

Rear subframes are weak and prone to cracking especially if suspension has been upgraded......

Averaged about 19mpg .....

Overall a great car but with a very linear power delivery, doesnt feel as quick as the Supra or as fun as I love the turbo torque the Supra has
