Jake
(Bear in mind that I know nothing about cameras.) I've bought a Canon 450D Digital SLR for my daughter's birthday. So, being a bloke, I'm having a good play before it gets wrapped up. It seems to take nice enough photos, even in my clumsy hands, but when I view the properties of a taken photo it says the Resolution is only 72dpi. Is that right? I was under the impression that to print a decent photograph it needs to be 300dpi, right? Surely a camera like this should take photos that will print out very nicely? Hermit
Yep, that DPI tag is largely irrelevant I think the only time it would come into play is if you loaded a picture into some program and asked it to print at a size given as a percentage (as opposed to in inches) - it would then work out the print size from the pixel dimensions and the dpi. At 100%, it would ask you to load paper that's about 40 x 55 inches

AndrewOW
I've got the same camera, and your daughter is very lucky, as it's an excellent camera IMO. The resolution is only the digital format that it takes the photos in. You can reduce the 'physical' size of the photo using something like Photoshop, but increase the resolution as you go. For example, divide the image by 4, but times the resolution by 4 etc, depending on the final result (photo paper, poster, web site etc), ie. 80cm wide 72dpi, down to 20cm wide, but 288dpi. It's a rough guide, but it's something I use just to keep the photos a little more manageable. HTH
