simbasupra
My supra has been clunking when bringing the clutch to the biting point, i had an oil leak which deteriorated the gearbox mounting rubber, therefore i believed it was this causing excessive movement when changing gears. I bought a full set (engine & gearbox) of TRD mounts. I have just fitted them and the clonking seems worse I also now have a vibration through the steering wheel at 1800 rpm. I am not sure if the clonking was something else and it has how been made worse by the firmer gearbox mount. Also i am not sure if the vibration at 1800 rpm is due to the firmer engine mounts. If anybody has any suggestions it would be much appreciated. Also if anybody has TRD mounts installed at the moment, have you experienced any of these symptoms after fitting? Thanks
simbasupra
I am going to have a look underneath again today, any suggestions or comments will still be appreciated.
Paul Whiffin
I have TRD engine and gearbox mounts on mine and there brilliant. Definately wont be them, where's the clunking coming from?
simbasupra
Gearbox area, i am now thinking clutch/flywheel? As this could produce both faults couldn't it? Think im going to have to put it on a four poster ramp and try and reproduce the noise with someone underneath looking for it.
Paul Whiffin
Bit hard to say without hearing it for ourselves.
pistonbroke
If memory serves, the TRD mounts are stiffer than stock, so anything causing vibration in the first place would be exaggerated by the stiffer mounts. My money is your flywheel, they are dual mass jobbies, and would imagine they cause vibration when buggered, the vibration was probably there before you replaced all the mounts, but your stiff mounts are making it transmit to the rest of the car so you can feel it. I take it you mean vibration at 1800rpm when the car is stationary. If this is the case, it's almost certainly the flywheel, as its the only big rotating mass big enough to cause vibration from the gearbox area. simbasupra
Thanks Paul and Pistonbroke, i had a listen underneath while someone was revving it at 1800 rpm on a four poster ramp, and could feel the vibration through the gearbox. I then put it on a two poster and could engage gears and hear the clunking noise, whilst engaging gear with my foot still on the clutch the rear wheels turned slightly showing me there was a clutch grabbing type issue. I firstly tried to bleed the clutch fluid as this was the cheapest option, however no luck. So i removed the gearbox and like said by pistonbroke the flywheel had quite alot of excessive play. Ive got one ordered up and arriving tomorrow along with a new clutch. I will update the thread of how it goes. Thanks for the help guys
Paul Whiffin
No probs, good luck tomorrow! While its out change the pilot bearing in the end of the crank as well, might even be that, check it.

GreaseMonkey
Just a thought have you checked the fan at the front of the engine? is it damaged at all/ fitted correctly/ Viscous coupling on the fan ok as this could cause vibration? had that fault on a mates 3 series BMW where one of the fan blades was missing causing the engine to shake. just a thought?
