RedM
I'm experiencing slow browsing of late. All speedtests show I'm getting a pretty good speed. The exchange is okay as well. I should be having a good 'ol time of it BUT the reality is that pic heavy pages load like dial-up, Youtube clips pause and stutter taking an age to load etc etc. We have a usage allowance but we haven't reached it yet and I know Plusnet will explain it away with the old contention excuse. Unlikely really when it was fine one day and then slowed the next and has stayed like that for weeks. Where did all the new user come from? I don't see any new estates in the area. Maybe all the old folks got a free laptop with their pensions. Anyway, I've logged a fault but to take it further Plusnet want to do a test that involves me disablling ALL firewalls for an unspecified amount of time. Does that sound reasonable? What are the current stats for not having an active firewall? It was about 15 minutes before trouble arrived IIRC. Sod that. Besides, I don't know how to disable a Linux firewall. michael
You're just a disgruntled vegan, not the Bank of England, I suspect there won't be many people out to get you and if you are on Linux don't you have that "pah, only Windows gets hacked" mentality anyway? FWIW it will be Plusnet and their traffic shaping stupidity in an attempt to make you upgrade to a better account, I threw money at my similar issue and it suddenly went away. Abz
Eh? Ahh I get it...basically you disable the firewall & carry on browsing. Get a virus on your PC & then Plusnet just say "Sorry sir, you have virus which is making your PC(s) slow, please reinstall the OS". They can do more advance line tests, pinging between the exchange & your home connection. Must be a loss of bandwidth somewhere along your street pipeline. ozz
I spent 3 months troubleshooting slow connection speeds with Tiscali. Not once did they ask me to disable the firewall. They tried loads of things, BT came out, line tests, equipement changes nothing worked. I thought it was their end and a config issue but they kept denying it. Anyway, I told them to stick their contract and moved to BT. The day I changed the speeds rocketed up and stayed there.
RedM
I keep saying that I'm going to switch to Zen but money is tight. Can anyone recommend a cheaper, unlimited ISP that DOES NOT use traffic shaping.

The cynic in me has already assumed it'll be something like that. I bet they hate me and my continued use of Ye Olde Broadband Plus. Do they actually have a service that hasn't been molested by the Ellacoyas?

I'm with blueyonder/Virgin for last 5 years and always got unlimited data usage + pretty descent service
Whitesupraboy2
Check your MTU setting on the router, That can cause poor performance and bad video playback. 2 years ago when setting up my first router i left it on default and it was too high and video playback was nightmare! Whitesupraboy2
Did all that years ago. Not changed a thing since. but have plusnet changed a thing just set up a talktalk one that is 1432 which is low!I expected 1458 or something round there. Lets be honest though they are probably just giving you a shit service!
Ric
Have you turned off the firewall in your account/connection options on the members website? This was causing me massive problems like the ones you are experiencing, i didn't even know it existed till I stumbled across it. Must be some kind of software firewall they apply at their end. Depending on your type of account, browsing etc should be limited at 2mb speeds during peak time, maybe a little less around 9-10pm, but im having no problems since i removed that firewall, also check if Interleaving is set on or off, turning mine off improved my gaming ping and it seemed to increase page load times, but that might just be placebo

I too have heard good things about O2 broadband. They're essentially the same as "Be There" broadband, so they may be cheaper if you're not already an O2 customer.
