Holidays in Reykjavik

Recommended Posts

Lucy & me are planning to go to Reykjavik in October for either 5 or 8 days. I know a couple of folks on here have been - is there anything particular you'd recommend doing/seeing?

So far we've got a day at the Blue Lagoon, some whale spotting and a day's horse riding (should be amusing as I've only ever cantered around a paddock twice).

Also, would it be worth hiring a car to get around over there?

Blue lagoon is a must.

Northern Lights trips was the worst thing i've ever done in my life. I'd recommend hiring a car or something and going out on your own.

Overall I'd recommend not going though, it was in Feb the most expensive country in the world.. £10 approx for a pint, and two pizzas from Dominoes was £30. The only thing cheap is the hotel and flights

Cheers Matt, slightly more useful. We hadn't planned on a specific Northern Lights trip, but it would be cool if we get to see it. Why was it so bad for you - bad tour, didn't see anything?

I know food and drink is expensive (although a couple of restaurant websites we looked at weren't too bad) and I don't drink alcohol, so that's one expense saved.

Lucy's mind is set, so not going isn't an option. I'd been looking at Norway, too, but apparently, we're going to Reykjavic, so there.

I went a couple of years back. as said Blue Lagoon is a must and the northern lights is a good one too.

Don't waste the money on a whale spotting trip unless they take you much further north. A boat out from Reykjavik will be lucky enough to see 1 porpoise (spelling) when we went we saw 3 and the the tour guide said that was a good day!!! we didnt see any whales at all.

theres a big shopping centre made out of 2 or 3 old silos, or something like that, cant quite remember, but its pretty cool just to check out the building.

we also went on a quad biking one day which was fun, but cold, the terrain is amazing.

yes its very expensive out there but i felt it was a good holiday and would go back one day.

if you plan to go out in the evenings you'll find the locals dress quite smart, trousers, shirt and tie etc even just to the pub, they seem to let off tourists wearing shirt and smart jeans but you would feel out of place in a tshirt.

look out for the mothers leaving their babies in prams outside coffee shops, its quite strange!

We didn't see the Aurora, but we were fully prepared for that. What we weren't prepared for was over 3 hours sat on a coach listening to the most boring person on the planet, getting excited about the fact that one side of a tunnel running under the sea was at a slightly higher gradient than the other side.

Hopefully things have improved. I've never had a holiday where i was actually watching my money, to the point where I was hunting out the best deals for a soft drink

Don't get me wrong though, we fully enjoyed the experiance, but never again. There is so much more value for money out there. I paid £1200 for the weekend; could have done 2 weeks all inclusive in the Dom Repub for that.

Norway would be cool, more chance of seeing the lights too.

P.s, it's not that cold either. Warm cloths a must, but you don't need to waste money on snow gear or polar bear coats etc.

Dude, have you SEEN me? Anyway, I think I've found a metal bar, so that should be more like home.

Yeah, that's why I'd looked into Norway. More or less the same scenery, more things to do, some fantastic stave churches (to burn down, lol) and a chance to sample some True Norwegian Black Metal.

I've got decent winter motorbike gear, so I figured that would be good enough. From what I've read, the weather will be kind of similar to Scotland, so not rediculously cold.

Wow, hope you have a fab time - somewhere I'd like to go. (sorry for OT post). :)

Quite looking forward to it, just trying to get an idea of stuff to do.

I went in January with my wife. Blue Lagoon is a must.

We went on a Northern Lights trip and got lucky. :)

We would like to go again, and next time we would do the Golden Circle Tour. They take you up onto the permanent ice cap you get to see the Gulfoss Waterfall which is amazing apparently.

Cost was irrelevent to us, it was for my wife's 40th and worth every penny spent.

They do quad biking trips and skidoo excursions and 4x4 offroad trips. Car hire is cheaper is you rent in Reykjavik rather than at the airport.

Some pics for you here.
