Chris Wilson
What I am trying to find is an application to allow me to split up a whole screenful of short cut desktop icons into seperate desktops of icons, accessed by tabs at the bottom of the screen. Say one tab brings up all shortcut icons to Supra sites and directories. Another will just show a desktop of race car site and directory icons, and another a desktop of items related to farming, yet another maybe icons for Windows programmes themselves. All the stuff I have found is for having complete programmes open on different desktops. Is there anything available to do what I want under Windows XP? Thanks. Thorin
You need a "pager", there's numerous options for Windows... These two came up in a quick search. http://windowspager.sourceforge.net/ http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/
Chris Wilson
No, these are apps to have multiple desktops of OPEN programmes. I don't work Windows like that. I rarely have more than 2 programmes open at a time. Let me see if I can explain a bit better. I have Firefox open right now, and on the bottom "bar" in Windows it shows the Firefox icon with "Means of having var..." next to it. Now this is the bar I want to have various sets of icons listed for desktop links. At the moment my desktop looks like this: I want to have just ICONS for related sites and applications showing, selectable from a set of buttons on the bottom bar. I am not wanting to switch between open applications and sites, just sets of desktop items. I'd probably end up with each desktop having only 10 icons on it, instead of the mess it is now. Ta! AndrewOW
Create some folders on your desktop and put the relevant icons etc into their specific folders, and name them such, as well?

I got what you meant Chris... looks like the first link I provided doesn't do that, but I think this VirtuaWin does. I'll have a look. Thorin
Ah with VirtuaWin it seems there's a module that lets you hide certain icons on the different desktops... http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/modules.php "VWDesktopIcons"
Matt H
Bizzare, what you're basically asking for is a folder system Have you not heard of the favorites button in windows explorer or the other net surfers? Click on the internet and then in your favs drop down you can have all the folders and links you like

This might help though... semi-NWS http://www.arrangebypenis.com/
Chris Wilson
Yep, I think I am (bizarrely ) asking for a folder system. I have never tried that! It works, but I'd like a way of having the folders show as labelled buttons in the bottom bar, rather than on the desktop. is that possible? Thanks. I tend to run Windows as it comes out of the box, I haven't fiddled very much

You could stick the folders in the top level of the first pane that comes up when you click "start" though. That would be more useful. Hermit
Is there a reason why you don't want to use the bookmarking within Firefox? Its bookmark toolbar could give you what you want - you can have folders on the toolbar, which then act like menus, so you could have a folder for each topic. New bookmarks can be dragged into the right folder straight from the address box. Commonly used links can be on the toolbar itself, and if the site has an icon that you'll recognize, you can delete the textual part to fit more in. Ends up looking like this... OhGod
Once you've organised your icons into folders you can add the folder as a link to your task bar. Right click an empty area of the task bar, go to Toolbars > New Toolbar... Browse for the folder of icons and click OK/Select Folder. This should add a pop-up menu for that folder showing it's contents. Repeat for other shortcut folders. With a touch more work you can get named folders to appear on the taskbar, and when you click each one you get that folder open showing it's contents. grahamc
You seriously need to tidy up that desktop!! Having read the 2nd explanation, I think, we may have tried to "over" engineer the solution. Folders with quick-links on your taskbar might be the best option... Wez
There is a free windows powertoy called virtual desktop manager that gives the same functionality that you get with most Linux GUIs, ie you can create upto 4 screens and click between them. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Errr... I can't suggest anything other than what other people have done really. There might be some tools out there that read the Firefox bookmarks and display them to you in a novel way, but I have no experience of them. MrRalphMan
I've tried this Wez, but it's no where near as good as a 'real' Linux GUI's, didnt take the running programs across. Can't remember if it took the Icons across, but it's worth a try and free... I mean really free not naughty free.
MrRalphMan
Mr B, I read it as he would like different pages for his numerous, read far too many, Icons.. Selected by buttons on the bottom of the page.

Animal
Would it not be as easy to just set up different user profiles for each area? That way you could switch users and have all related desktop icons on screen, relevant pictures and documents would be in that user's My Documents folder, etc.
OhGod
Just happened to come across this; http://www.alastria.com/index.php?p=software-7s Might well do what you want Chris. Designed for Windows 7, but works on XP as well.
