mjansari
£1100 for a Power steering cooling pipe??? Is this right Can any one please advise. My power steering sprung a leak on Mon and spewed its contents all over the driver. Car was taken into my local Toyota dealership in Loughborough and they have quoted £1100 for replacement. This consist of £400 of part and the rest in labour. They estimate 6.5 hours labour. I have a UK supra. Can anyone help or advise.
JohnA
Sounds about right for Toyota prices. Here they charge £1.50 for the sump plug washer mate, I still can't believe how I kept a straight face when they proudly announced it... If I were you mate I'd check out the traders on this board, whoever is closer to you. Chris Wilson, that sort of thing...
Robert
yea i agree it was £5.20p for a wheel nut!!!
dangerous brain
It depends on where the pipe is I guess. I had a pipe blow out on my omega and according to the vauxhall computerised workshop manual the engine needed to be dropped out to change the pipe. Funny old thing a local garage type bloke just took off the inlet manifold and fiddled about til he got it off and the replacement on. that pipe was £200 and it was only a water pipe. As far as cost of toyota bits goes I had a quote of nearly £300 for the centre boxs on an N/A's exhaust which are mild steel and had them relaced bespoke by an exhaust centre with stainless steel ones for £200. dangerous brain
hmm yes they are having a huge giraffe there then. I got a hole in my old honda accord one of them and the garage guy fixed it with some high strength rubber hose clamped over the top of the damaged section of pipe. Robert
its more than just a pipe thats why its costs £400 but the labour charge does sound way off but then again someone who has acutally done a job like this will be able to say more about it. No its just a pipe dude , nothing more , FMIC kits sometimes come with a U shaped replacement , the labour prob inc complete removal of the front nose etc , you could also replace with a small oil cooler or do like me get rid of it completly !!! suprabrown
If it's just a pipe, whip it off and find a local hydraulic pipe manfacturer. They will be able to fabricate a new one in no time. I did this on an old cortina once, they even reused the old high pressure ends. It might be a PITA to get out, looks like the active spoiler etc. will be in the way cheers mark
wez_p
or like dude says get one of the kits that comes with a FMIC to just 'U' it off instead if it was me & i wasn't going for a FMIC i would get one from a scrappers & then if i couldn't fit it myself, get a Supra mechanic who's willing off here to do it

It dont look that complicated but 6.5 hours is alot of workFFS thats only a bit of pipe how can they charge so much. i sold my stock one for £10 you could get a FMIC and fit yourself as you get a power steering pipe in kit and you would have some change too D.I.Y
normore1
if its the pipe thats leaking, you should be able to repair it. If the hole is near an end then just cut the pipe and run some extra hydraulic hose. If it's in the middle then just pull it off and bring it to a welder to have the hole brazed. The pipe is low pressure so a repair should not be a problem. The labour is definitely over the top. This repair should not take more than about two hours (includes drain, refill and air purge). Even at £75/hr that's only £150. BTW £400 for a piece of pipe is larceny.
michael
I was throwing my old one around in the garage last night on a tidying mission - at that price I'd best wrap it up in a nice blanket and keep it safe!

jiixer
I did mine with Some ally tubing and Fuel hose, works fine :- £20 all in all and 2 hrs work. Was a bumper off job tho!
Jezz
This is an easy job! I replaced my original one last year purely cos it looked bent. Four bolts and two hose clips! Clamp the soft pipes before removal, and you should only need to top up fluid, and not worry about bleeding the air out. I have two spare if you want one. I usually sell these for forty quid!!
