terribleturner
Ok, my computer seems to be really slow at the moment. I thought i may have downloaded something by mistake but i cleaned the computer several times now and it's still slower than it used to be. Im a little worried about my CPU Usage as the majority of the time it's sat at 100% (although it's not too bad at this moment in time). My PF Usage is sat at 750mb which seems high. I also seem to have 42 Processes working. And body have any ideas on this stuff?? All i have open is one page of my Internet Explorer. mawby
From the task manager, take a screen dump of the processes tab and post it up here. Also, enable the "mem usage" column first if its not visible already.
penguin
i've had the same issue on my laptop......... even on a clean xp install, the explorer.exe process was always sitting at 100% ..... and causing the cpu to heat up quite a fair bit............. and i was running NOTHING but the windows.... its a known issue which was supposed to be fixed in sp2.... but i aint been arsed to download it again.... so cant comment
terribleturner
Here's the screen shot. Running Nero as you can see This may have something to do with when i power up the laptop it closes down after about 2 or 3 minutes. Turn it on again and then it closes after say 30 seconds. The 3rd time i start it up it works fine.
Bobbeh
Checked for spyware? How much ram do you have? Dont worry about the bg processes so much, a lot of them are windows related, hardware related, print spoolers etc .
Whitesupraboy2
mate try to get screen shot when cpu usage is at 100% not 5% may help see where problem is ;-) lol

Whitesupraboy2
ok looks like u have a issue with Internet explorer. whilst internet explorer is doing something it is obviously effecting the system hence system going up. State the obvious he says what i would do to test this is. install mozilla web browser. use it for a day and see if your computer still goes slow. this is sign of spyware / virus infecting your internet explorer but not always sometimes a windows update can fix it...obviously rarely Edit ** yes there are more technical ways of sorting it out. but this is quick and easy to test to see if internet explorer is your problem
Bobbeh
How Much Ram Do You Have?
terribleturner
How Much Ram Do You Have? 512, but i can put more in as i havn't yet.
Bobbeh
Well remember 256meg is the minimum for running XP.. so 512 isnt that much better, youre HD will go nutz as the Operating system is caching all the stuff it would usually write to memory onto your hard disks, thus causing it to go slow and griiiiind. Put a gig in it and you wont have a problem.
terribleturner
Cheers James, will install Mozilla later. Thanks Bobbeh, A cheap an easy upgrade that may do it. Cool, will be worth it anyway. Thanks evryone
Whitesupraboy2
Bobbeh, you are right to a degree mate 512mb isnt much. but my pc at home is only running 384Mb SD RAM (dont pick on me ) and i run nero etc... and not once has my PC ground to halt on XP. there is no way Iexplorer should take up that amount of processing power unless you are doing something heavy in internet explorer like opening a very big visio file. no probs mate, hope u sort it i know how annoying PC's can be
Gamer
1) Get Adware, spybot or Pestpatrol and run a spyware check on your computer. 2) Also what antivirus do u use?. If u have one, run a virus check. 3) Go to start menu, programs, accessories, system tools and run disk cleanup. Select your C: drive from the list. This deletes all unneccessary temporary files and cookies from your computer 4) Go to start menu, programs, accessories, system tools and run disk defragmenter. Select your C: drive. This arranges all data in your drive so it helps programs run faster.
Bobbeh
Bobbeh, you are right to a degree mate 512mb isnt much. The extra memory would help sort the large page file. The processing power eaten up is just something busy, like I said earlier might be a good idea to check for spyware, unless he was running something intensive like flash within the browser. Bobbeh
Not really, its an integral part of windows. Just clean your pc up
terribleturner
Im using Norton Antivirse and clean it up with Spybot and Ad-Aware. Is it worth using Pestpatrol aswell or anything else?? Thanks again. So good to not have to wait years for a page to download
Bobbeh
Spybot Search and destroy is pretty good. Windows XP Service pack 2, and a good firewall are also recommended

But then thaat was a good few months ago now and they may have fixed the bugs that were in it.
Bobbeh
SP2 is best installed on a clean PC, it can mess up existing installations. So there ya go, format
