not sure about the springs mate, but would have thought you need to do the whole set or the car will sit badly on the road - also may need geo done too. When a rear shock went on mine I replaced both under advice. kept the OK one (only 20k on it) as a spare if needed in the future.

Are you swapping the shocks yourself? if not, it will be cheaper to do both at the same time due to fitting costs and geo etc

That is quite probably a very bad idea from a handling/safety point of view :) Change all or none.

 

(If you are replacing like for like, though, just change the pair, fronts or rears)

The best solution i see is get a second hand shock with spring all built and replace the whole unit thats no good.

 

Then save your £'s and do a complete change when you have the funds to buy, fit and geo etc
