AlanM
How do you know he was a policeman unless he was in uniform and if he was in uniform then yes you have to stop (they are never off duty ,,,lol)
DanBEXsupra
stop. open the boot, get your £120 golf club out and let him have it! on a serious note. i havnt got a clue, if he was off duty, why was he stopping you?
marbleapple
I always thought that they were never off duty but at the same time have to adhere to the rules they follow when at work (i.e. if they start ranting and raving for no other reason than you cut them up then you can ask for their id number and complain about them). I also think they have to adhere to PACE etc. I personally would be very concerned about any person pretending to be a Policeman and asking you to pull over. I would want to see I.D and also would demand their staff number... if they didn't then I wouldn't stop or would consider the possibility of it being someone playing at 'Policemen'. I know there is a few of these gentlemen on here so I am sure you will get a definitive answer at some point.
michael
If you don't stop he'll just do the necessary paperwork to pull you in to improve his stats, your word against his for whatever he decides you've done and he'll win in court. geoff meade
Once you stopped and the officer identified himself as a police officer, then the law states that you must obey his commands. Basically cops are cops 24/7. Better luck next time.

Rolling my eyes at you today Michael (I'm sure you will cope) The he'll win at Court bit is rubbish of course and I suspect why most off duty Policemen don't pull people over outside work is purely because they can't prove what happened. Guest Garfy
I performed an overtaking manoeuvre this morning which in his opinion was unsafe, he ran over to me at a set of traffic lights and showed me his badge said he was an off duty police officer, and told me to pull into the layby up ahead. I wouldn't mind but I don't really think it was all that bad, and he was really aggressive to start off with, and his second sentance was "and before you speak I will issue a court summons if you give me any attitude" Now, I'm not a 17 year old anymore (Wish I was) I'm 31, I wasn't in the supra, I was in the MX5, and, I tend to talk to people in the same manner that they talk to me, i.e. if he hadn't spoken to me with attitude, I would have been very polite back to him. Roll your eyes all you like sir, been there, got the points and fine to confirm the story - ultimately when it's a fine upstanding member of the force against an unknown citizen we know who the courts will side with, even if they have no evidence. Matt H
An off duty pulled up next to me once and said "If I was on duty I'd have pulled you for that". I said, "well good job you weren't then" By the way, an officer has to be in uniform... so if he's off duty I'm sure he wouldn't be in his work attire. Did you get his name and number? Just 'flashing' a card isn't good enough especially if he is using threatening behaviour. if he hadn't spoken to me with attitude, I would have been very polite back to him. So I suspect you shouted abuse, stuck your fingers up etc and now you are slightly concerned you shot yourself in the foot?
The Raven
No so. They are never off duty, and have to act if its safe to do so. I know this as my mate is a copper and once had to stop a fight on the train home. The rest of us where wasted but he was sober. He ended up with another off duty copper holding the fools while the train left without him. How we laughted............he didnt think it was so funny. So I suspect you shouted abuse, stuck your fingers up etc and now you are slightly concerned you shot yourself in the foot? No I wasn't rude, I just wasn't polite, i.e. I argued my point. his first sentance was, "at what point did you think your over taking was in anyway acceptable, I'm disgusted, at your driving, and I'm still shaking from it" all I did was overtake on a straight that is about 3 miles long, over took 4 cars, and caught up with another car that was over taking, pulled back in behind that, when clear over took that as well. oh, he was on his way to work, not in full uniform
tbourner
My mate grabbed some bloke who was trying to nick something from Homebase when we were in there, we had to wait in the managers office with him until some on duty cops arrived from the local area. He claimed 2 hours overtime for it though! IME police only ever get 'rude' if you're being abusive to them (for stopping them when you've done nothing) or if you've done something wrong - in either case they're in the right and you should do what they say; off duty or not. The only exception I use is when an unmarked car flashes me to pull over, if I'm on my own and not in a built up area I'll always ring the constabulary to confirm they are real police - then pull over once confirmed. Guest Garfy
Well, he obviously thought it was wrong, otherwise he wouldn't have stoped me. I just don't understand why they feel the need to be so agressive, there is no need for it. maybe its me.

A Constable HAS to be in uniform in order to exercise his powers under the Road Traffic Act.Even if he subsequently produces his ID, he still has no power to stop you. TBH he hasn't done himself any favours by getting involved in what is at the end of the day a relatively trivial matter. I like to leave my work, at work. If you feel that he has treated you unfairly or abused his authority or was uncivil, then complain.
tbourner
A Constable HAS to be in uniform in order to exercise his powers under the Road Traffic Act. What about for other offences (not traffic)? Like my mate who nabbed some thief in a shop? Does it just come under a citizens arrest (if there is such a thing)? I assume cops on duty but in plain clothes are a different matter as well? Mike
I can't bare that 'command presence' some coppers have. Nothing rubs me up the wrong way quite like it. I think most of them do it to get a reaction. A while back Charlotte had a prang in her car and I obviously rushed over there to see what was happening. The attending Police man was probably one of the biggest idiots I've ever come across. I rang the RAC to get her car towed, and he made like I'd invaded Poland for not letting him call them, as they would come quicker knowing it was a Police bloke. Cock. Some of them do the 'good' Police no favours. No wonder they have they're work cut out. Good advice there Doug

tbourner
proof they cant do shit without it so id say see you in court, this happened to me about a month back was racing some dude in a bmw (i was in my daily driver vectra 1.9cdti) and won, as i was driving at some speed in a 40 i went past 2 police officers in uniform they waved at me so i just floored it and thought no more 3 days later i had a letter stating i was driving in excess speeds, the letter then went onto say we need to know who was driving and i have 28 days to let them know so i binned the letter. About 33 days went passed and guess what i had a knock at the door and it was mr plod. Cut a long story short he was a cock and had no proof and i said i cant remeber so he then said your lucky this time ill let you off with a worning, so i said well thats not luck thats all you can do and smiled, he then walked off and i thought well thats my card marked. yes i know i shouldnt be racing and shouldnt be speeding but its fun when you beat a cock in a BMW lol.
