Supragal
Who's everyone with? Any "don't go there" companies I should know about? So far I've got quotes from Scottish Widowns, More Than, Tesco and Norwich Union...
DaveRex
I'm with HSBC, but recently I got other quotes and realsied I have been paying £15 a month more than other places can offer it

Been with More Than since i bought the house seem good quotes, but do spend 10 time long looking for car insurance than house insurance
mawby
I found quotes from Sainburys to be pretty good, especially the life insurance. Damn these things you need when buying a house!

Steve
I use elephant.co.uk. They go through an underwriter. There price was about £100 cheaper a year than my previous insurer.

Supragal
Ok, can anyone explain this to me: Got a Tesco quote, which was slightly cheaper but it said that building was covered for 61k and contents 15k. That can't be right, surely? I mean how many houses can be rebuilt for 61k (ours is estimated 70k to rebuild) and 15k to replace the entire contents? Surely I'm misunderstanding something?! mawby
No, the buildings one of based on an average for your postcode, and the contents is (I believe) purposely low to make the quotes look good. You should be able to override them to something more sensible and get it to re-quote.
Dnk
Not sure about tesco but my Norwich Union policy is for £20k contents and up to £500k to rebuild the house if im reading it right, they have a helpline in case you need to check exactly what your covered for, might be worth phoning tesco to be sure. My cover cost £158 for the year which was the cheapest quote by a fair bit, all the others i tried were £50 + more for very similar cover on 2 bed semi valued at approx £200k. Couldn't find an option for over-riding anything so their loss!!... plus it's only slightly cheaper than More Than and thats up to 450k rebuild and 60k contents which is nearer the mark!! RedM
I'm not sure this is all that relevant but at my old flat I was with Direct Line for contents insurance (building was covered by landlord) only. Six years I was with them and figured when I moved up here I'd use them again. I was told that they don't do contents insurance for flats! To cut a long story short they say I should never have been issued a certificate and, had I needed to claim, they wouldn't have paid out. WTF? Thank god I didn't need to claim. Now with AA for what its worth.
