supspower
Ok ive got a noise coming from the engine bay im guessing its belt related? A pulley? It sounds kinda metallic i now its gonna be tough with the quality of sound but here goes.... ok so far thats the best i can do for showing the video unless someone can tell me how to add it so you can play it from this thread?? Hope this works ha! Edited August 27, 2009 by supspower (see edit history)
pistonbroke
From what I can tell, it sounds like belt squeal. Some may not approve of this, but get some lubitol (or other silicone based lube) and spray a tiny bit on the ribbed side of the belt when the engine is running. If the noise stops, it's the belt. SUPRALOOPY
Get some water and while the engine is running pour it on the belt. If the noise stops then REPLACE!!!!! the belt. EASY!
TTRickeh
Mine ocassionally squeeks. I spray WD40 in behind the power steering pully and that fixes it.
supspower
Ok ill do the water test then if it stops ill change the belt if it comes back ill get the WD40 out....Actually scrub that...ill do the water test then the Wd40 test then ill decide what to do next depending on results Though if anyone else knows for sure by all means type it down
Guest Luigi
I'd be removing the drive belt and turn the idler/tensioner pulley by hand to see if it's OK, then do the same with the other 'driven' pulleys. If no resolve, start the engine minus drive belt (for no more than 20 secs) and hear if the noise is still present.
supspower
If no resolve, start the engine minus drive belt (for no more than 20 secs) and hear if the noise is still present. Is that safe ??
Guest Luigi
Your water pump and fan wont be running, hence keep it short. You wont need the A/C, power steering or alternator. You will probably notice if the noise is still there, in an instant. Squirting crap on your belt wont do it any good and wont tell you excactly what the problem is. AlexJames
Your powersteering fluid nice a topped up? mine made an awful racket which I thought was the belt...
supspower
Yea it was a little low but nothing major topped it up but still the sound is there. Theres no play in any of the pulleys. Cars going in for a coolant change this afternoon so will have a more detail inspection then.

Guest Luigi
Have you run it without the drive belt?
snake
sounds like the idler/tensioner pully .i sprayed mine with wd40 .
Ian C
Mine ocassionally squeeks. I spray WD40 in behind the power steering pully and that fixes it. That's probably the PAS pump bearing on it's way out. Mine did that and the WD40 trick worked up to the point where the bearing race ate itself spectacularly
TTRickeh
Ouch. Sounds ominous, easy to fix?
legendswraith
Yes its fairly easy to fix, the hardest bit is getting the serpentine belt back on. 6203.2RSR is the bearing http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/advanced_search_result.php?osCsid=cb74f8119abdd8171cc27dca7d5f8b9d&sort=2a&search_in_description=0&keywords=6203.2RSR+&osCsid=cb74f8119abdd8171cc27dca7d5f8b9d&x=16&y=12er (link to bearing supplier) Take the pump out and split it remove the bearing and press a new one in, you'll also want to get a new seal kit from toyota. There is nothing to stripping them just be wary you don't lose any of the fins from the rotor when you split it.
Chris Wilson
Mine ocassionally squeeks. I spray WD40 in behind the power steering pully and that fixes it. The PAS pump bearing is breaking up, fix it now or you'll be looking at a complete pump and a new rack as the rotor breaks up and shrapnel goes through the system. Chris Wilson
Is that safe ?? Perfectly.

srmotorsport
a common problem is with the bottom pulley either coming apart or missing a few bits of the edge my friends twin turbo sup made similar noise in the end we found out it was needing a new bottom pulley.
