CJ
I have been struggling to find suitable upgrade memory for my PC out here on Kos and finally had some delivered from DABS. I have gone to put it in today and both sticks are giving me the rapid beeps (i think that means bad memory) on power up. The specs are as follows: Processor - AMD Athlon XP2200+ 1667MHz Motherboard - Soltek 75FRV Hard drive - 186Gig (160 free) Unknown memory 512mb I tried the Crucial memory advisor thing and they suggested I could upgrade to 2 x 1GB sticks. I then bought these and had them shipped to Kos. As I said, I have now tried both the sticks and they both make the rapid beeps but when I put the old memory back in, all is OK. I have just noticed that the new ones are PC3200 and my old memory was PC2700 - would that make a difference? All help greatly appreciated. Matt H
I have just noticed that the new ones are PC3200 and my old memory was PC2700 - would that make a difference? I used Hardware secrets for info when I upgraded my computer, including the overclocking bit. I remember that my RAM was PC2700 and the new stuff is PC3200 and it works fine. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/
CJ
That is very strange I have just used the Sandra SIS program to ascertain how much memory the motherboard can accept and it says that I have 4 memory slots with one being used and yet I know that there is definitely only 2 there! The strange thing is, the Crucial program said the same too. I am very confused now
michael
The spec of the Dabs stuff seems to match that recommended by Crucial, they list a 2700 and a 3200. Have you tried the memory individually? have you tried it in slot 1 and 3 rather than 1 and 2 (or 3 and 4)? 75FRV should have 4 slots. Are you replacing a single 512mb or 2 x 256mb? Is there a red LED visbile on the motherboard when the memory is inserted? Does it stay on when the new stuff is put in? (Indicates 2.5v feed to memory I believe). Latest bios version? Sounds like it could be faulty memory, anyone else who can test it for you in another machine?

If you have 4 slots (this may sound a bit Neanderthal), but could that suggest that it takes 4 x 512 sticks rather than 2x 1gb sticks? I have not checked that as i put everything back together before powering up - noob eh? Latest bios version? Unsure how to check if it is or not Sounds like it could be faulty memory, anyone else who can test it for you in another machine? I could take it to a local PC shop but somehow I don't think both would be faulty. I say that as almost all of the reviews suggest this is a very good make of memory and therefore for both sticks to be faulty would be quite surprising
MrRalphMan
aida32 also gives good information regarding your system. The quicker memory shouldn't be an issue, but it could be.. The beeps you get when powering up, are they in a pattern? ie three quick beeps and a pause? The MB will make different beeps for different errors. wkdtime
CJ, Take out the 512mb, replace this with 1gb and see if the system starts. If so; then proceed to install the 2nd stick (once the system has powered down) and then try again. Try and refer to the Bios manual, you may need to make some Bios changes before adding memory. CJ
I am pretty sure they are 3 and a pause. I have attached a couple of pics here for you to see the slots in the board.

Hmm, there's a distinct lack of Greek salad in there. Maybe some taramasalata will sort it out?

I have already done the changes as follows: 1. Taken out the old stick and put both new sticks in - beeps 2. Put one stick into the first slot - beeps 3. Put second stick into the first slot - beeps 4. As above but in the second slot - beeps

michael
That doesn't look like the 75FRV
CJ
That doesn't look like the 75FRV I agree. And yet the Crucial program and the Nero info tool both say it is. Confusing eh?

DamanC
Soltek - who the fuck are they!?! Colin - more photos of the mobo please. HQ of any large words too. I suspect the motherboard in Q does not support pc 3200 ram and will not drop the bus speed down. Either that or both RAM sticks are phucked. I love crucial's scanner, very much cack sometimes. I really cannot see both sticks being kaput and am starting to think the motherboard is the problem. Now that leaves me with a PC that only has 512mb of RAM and 2 perfectly good 1gb sticks that I cannot use - buggernuts!

DamanC
It may also be that your Mobo does not accept 1GB sticks....
CJ
It may also be that your Mobo does not accept 1GB sticks.... If that's the case then I guess I have an option of a new MoBo or get a new PC built using the Crucial sticks I have already purchased? As my CD writer is also playing up, it doesn't make sense to spend too much on repair upgrade and I will probably be better off going for new eh? I will have to trawl web sites looking for prices as i am back in the UK on the 22nd for 2 weeks and could take back loads of bits then. Its an old tech, and not worth building a new pc around them. If you want an easy life, then go new. You have what looks to be a rather old PC there buddy. The other alternative is to get another 512MB stick and just be done with it. Try and match it to the same as what you already have. Give us the motherboard brand and model and I can go delving. I cant make anything out from the pictures earlier in the thread. You could always have a PC built/part built here and have it posted to you for when you hit the UK
