SupraStar 3000
About three months ago a local garage fitted a new starter motor for me, then today I asked Toyota to change my oil and fit a new timing belt. The car was due for a service but to keep costs down I did some work myself like filters, engine cooler and brakes. Then Toyota call me and say the cam pulleys are loose and the tension bar cracked requiring new parts at £300 (£790 including oil change and fan belt) Question 1: would a mechanic need to go anywhere near the timing belt, cam pulleys or tension bar when removing and replacing the starter motor? Question 2: What would you expect to pay for a new timing belt including fittings, locking pins and tension bar? Cheers guys. All help appreciated

Homer
Q1: No chance Q2: Not sure about the tension bar but my local (useless) Toyota garage charge £200 to change a timing belt (parts and labour inc)
SupraStar 3000
Cheers guys. Looks like I was a VERY lucky boy. God knows the problems I would have had if the timing belt had of snaped off or the pulleys bust

Digsy
Then Toyota call me and say the cam pulleys are loose and the tension bar cracked requiring new parts at £300 (£790 including oil change and fan belt) Hold on a sec... The oil change will be next to nowt (or sub £100 in Toyota-speak). The pulley and tension bar job is £300 A new FEAD belt (don't call it a fan belt) is £80 for a genuine Toyota one. Fitting the FEAD belt is a zero-labour job as is has to come off when they do the cam belt anyway. ...so where the hel does £790 come from? dude
They could mean the tension bar for the drive belt , this is quite expensive . Dude
SupraStar 3000
think it must be the tension bar for the drive belt. I'll go and talk to them tonight after work Got a few questions myself regarding cost and parts

eyefi
ahhh, so it was the crank pully that was loose, not the cam pulleys. i thought it was a bit strange that the cam pulleys would be loose. that's a big bill though they did forget to bill you for the thread lock adhesive though did the loose crank pulley cause any damage to the end of the crank, specifically the keyway? SupraStar 3000
no. I asked and the mechanic said the crank was ok. Good job too because that would have cost a fortune to replace. I also asked to see all the original parts and have taken the home with me. The damage is evident on the defect parts so I guess I have been lucky although its cost me a bomb to fix

Digsy
So was it the crankshaft FEAD belt pulley that was loose, or the crankshaft timing belt sprocket? I'm still confused
