Abz
Right...old man has retired now & as a present from his wonderful son (yep talking myself up here...) I am thinking of replacing his 1996 Mercedes C Class with another car...sense a poll coming on! I have narrowed it down to 3 cars. Jaguar XJ8 (1999) Lexus GS300 (1999) Mercedes C Class (1999 facelift model). Bascially I have a small budget of £3k more or less. He needs are that he drives it pretty much daily & does mainly very short distance trips, so reliablity is a must (Leave the Jag alone). I understand that these cars are big engines but after working constantly for the past 40-odd years I think he should get some luxury. He loves the Jag, but I am not sure it will be suitable for his needs (plus I will be paying for running costs). The Lexus GS300 is brilliant & I like it very much! Its so smooth & comfy & with the toyota\lexus build quality would be good for daily use. He loves his C Class as its very economical, drives smoothly but its done 90k from the 50k we brought it on & he used it as a daily runner to his business. So another one in the newer shape would be good with some goodies. All other suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks guys

Abz
Which one is better than cr? CR? You mean CRX Michael? 5 series or 7 series BMW ? I have had both, very comfortable cars or my E55 AMG http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=195081 Yes I saw this thread...beautiful machine but I would not trust my Dad with that...I dont think I would even trust myself with! Have to say that is a brilliant price for such a great machine! Was also thinking about 5 or 7 Series... 5 would be more driveable for Dad. Abz
Ooh nice: http://pistonheads.com/sales/1193931.htm Mmm... see everyone is swaying towards the GS300, or is this a biased site to be asking this question! Anyway thoughts on the Jag?
michael
CR? You mean CRX Michael? I have no idea to be honest. What about an X-Type? Maybe a little low-rent in comparison to the others but cheap and cheerful and quite nice to drive. IS200? Audi A8? I think you've already made a pretty good shortlist. R Black
Lexus are known for being uber reliable, Mercs are ok, Jags cost alot to run? although mist of that would be depreciation, which you will have missed. I'd like to see my pops in a Jag, thats not what i would buy him though. I'd hate it to play up and dissapoint. My girlfreinds uncle wanted a Jag, but was convinced(by his mechanic) to get a Lexus 300, he loves it.
johnny g
Lexus over the others any day. Thought about a 520i?

I thought of the X Type & after driving one I thought Dad might not find it comfortable enough as his a little big sideways IS200 was also on the cards but similar to the X Type, thought I'd get something bit bigger to suit him. The A8 is a little dated for my price budget but the new ones look very nice! Got picked up by one from work & I loved it!
Abz
An amazing 535d? By any chance talking about your 5 series here? I am thinking of a 5 Series as well...but not generally a fan of BMW, it is also a more younger gen car to be honest.
johnny g
I am lol - I love my 5 series! I'd look at an E39 520i or a 530i, stay away from the 525i or 525d in those models, they're the weakest engines in the line up IMO.

I do like the amount of gadgets in the 5 Series and the leather is really nice! Drive is pretty good as well...
johnny g
Yea, the 520i is as good as the 525i in real world and more frugal - the 525d sounds agricultural.
