Hybrid turbo replacement-what to do?

Carl

Recommended Posts

I have been getting the dreaded blue smoke on startup and occasionaly when i rev the engine when idling.

I am thinking that as well as a bit of stem seal leakage I also have some turbo seal issues.

I have just gone full decat and the problem has become more obvious.

I have tried reading various threads on replacement turbos but most seem to go single turbo.

I want to keep my current stock twin turbo setup but run 1.2bar etc.

I read lots of bad stuff about aftermarket hybrids such as turbotechnics, turbo dynamics not being built well and potentialy being worse than the smoky turbo you replace.

some of the threads were quite old though so Im hoping after market turbo build quality has moved on since.

Can anyone recommend what options there are available that will leave my setup standard so to speak but replace my failing ceramic turbos with a good after market twin turbo solution.

Anyone's experience with rebuilds etc?

Cheers Carl

New stock jspec turbo replacement would be my choice faced with the same situation.

Steel Hybrids offer almost no benefit in terms of peak power, but lose that lovely mid range torque the ceramic ones provide. If you are only looking to run 1.2 bar and have stock cams, etc then I can't see any other viable option without spending big money.

Dare I ask what Toyota charge for new turbos?

Theres a company that the Soarer community love, me includes, called CR turbos. They provide a good, fast, quality service and will save you alot over a turbo technics rebuild. Worth a shout perhaps?

Also if youre running stock setup/pressure most rebuilds have a good warrantee. Good luck :)

About the same or less than hybrids last time the question came up.

The car really needs a full check out first to conclude the problem before spending the cash on new tubbies of course :)

So are you saying around £1000 mark as turbo dynamics charge about that for a pair to be rebuilt?

As for checking out the car, how does one go about that without stripping down the engine.

I was under the impression that diagnosing such smoky problems is very difficult to establish.

A leaking turbo is very easy to spot when theyre stripped off, my Soarer had one, The exhaust turbine housing is wet with oil, not alot, very little infact. But it takes very little oil to make alot of smoke.

And TT charge near 1700 quid for a rebuild last time I checked

Last time I looked, i noticed oil has been seeping out of the rubber pipe over the airbox so I imagine thats a bad sign before i even look inside.:(

I did ring TT about a year ago and they quoted about £1000 a pair but I have no idea to what degree of build that was.

Maybe they mis-quoted.

To be honest I would have expected the price to be nearer your figure.

More than that, a fair bit more. However the turbo's will be new OEM spec rather than refurbed steel bladed ones. There is a enormous difference in terms of build quality, tolerances and longevity.

First off.. I haven't tried this yet, but I might well give it a go on my 1JZ turbos if he starts doing CT12A kits...

DIY rebuild the tubs with one of these kits (well, two for a pair I guess)... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CT12B-TURBO-REBUILD-KIT-SUPRA-2JZGTE-LANDCRUISER-HIACE_W0QQitemZ170373025728QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item27ab060fc0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

Then send them off to be checked and balanced, which might cost about £100, or a bit more, depending on how much work needs doing.

In theory, if you marked the wheel and nut before disassembling, you could skip the balancing, but that assumes they were in balance before you started...

Anyway... that's a cheap option to keep the ceramic :D

Lol Jon, followed by a rebuild 500 miles later when it shats itself down your exhaust!! Turbos are simple for sure, but you cant spin it up to 90k rpm to balance it properly in your shed ;)

Honestly Carl, gove CR turbos a call, you'll be surprised at the price and Im sure Hermit will refer to people that have had great service from them :)

Lol you edited that post in the time it took me to type 10 words!

But yes, I recall good reports about CR :)

I can't remember who used them first though, or who has put most miles on the rebuilds :search:

i have sent CR Turbo's an email asking for specs and price etc.

Ideally I want a brand new original turbo but dont want to spend several thousand getting them as budget is tight.

So alternative is best rebuild i can achieve without ruining the original setup too much.

I guess it will be a compromise but hopefully not one i will regret.

If you have all the rotatives and the journals etc replaced then the turbos should be as new as long as the chra is sound.

If anyone is going this route and feels they may have issues with housings or chra's then if you strip them down to components i'll happily get them plastic media blasted and NDT'd for you at work
