The Xbox 360 is clearly a bag of $#@! but the gaming experience is so damn good.....:innocent:

H.

LOL looks that way.

Perhaps we could have some kind of xbox/ps3 *which is best* poll?

Haha how original :)

hate these threads, both my xboxs have been ok so far, touch wood!

MS = Software developers, not hardware. This is their (admittedly rushed) second outing into hardware which explians why it's got some serious design flaws.

It's not really an excuse lack of experience. With enough money, talenet and due dilligence it could've been fine, I bet they'd have hired some of the best people the market could offer with their budgets. It was just rushed. I don't believe the failure rate of the original xbox was that high was it?

I bet there were a lot of frustrated MS hardware people designing that console that were pushed to a deadline that shouldn't have been. Been there, done that when designing a hardware layout for something. No matter how good your team is, no matter how good your intentions or warnings are about rushing things some people just want something out the door to market and then pick up the s*** if/when it does fall over. Sometimes yes you can get rare things not picked up in a decent QA time as you cannot plan for every eventuality and permutation unless you have a very very long time.

For examples look at the Challenger O ring incident, engineers warned and warned. Ford's firestone tires probably had people warning. Also BMW's 2001/2/3 M3 engines with bearing issues which then had a warranty increase or replacement program. I'm not just bashing MS here, I just loath when a product is released by someone just to get out early and appear to one-up on their competitors. Even Sony did it with some quite frankly shameful DVD players back when they first came out.

It's the whole point of development (in fact it's definition - the act or process of developing; growth; progress:). Development and QA should be a step forward, yes it is in graphics and what it delivers, but reliability should not really go down in the evolution of a product.

I think the main issues have been heat dissipation from what I've read? I believe they've revised the mobo, GPU and chip to lower the BTU of the thing but why haven't they put massive vents in the casing to help shed the heat? Look at the plethora of aftermarket coolers for the things. I laughed when I saw you could buy an intercooler for a console :) That sort of stuff really should be left to the big big computing kit which is mainly kept in an air con environment or freon/water cooled anyway.

I'd like to know the failure rate of the old school consoles.

My snes used to get abused when i was a snipper and it never missed a beat.

I've never had a console fail on me to be fair, only ones I haven't owned are the X-Box's though.

:rlol:

Secret to avoiding the red ring of death on an xbox 360 - unplug it from the wall when not in use....

On my 3rd 360...this one has never let me down and its only plugged in when i use it.

That's probably a good idea.

It’s simple equation really

Xbox is made by Microsoft + Microsoft is utter pile = over 50% failure rate.

Microsoft are pretty sh!t hot when it comes to computers in my opinion. Not a fan of the x-box for the main reason is the controller is naff.

on my third xbox.. on the plus side i look forward to it breaking so i can open it up get all my time wasted on those oh so pretty games back.

On a side note, I know im behind the times but playing through COD4 the single player campaign and had great gaming moment after the massive explosion while i was in the helicopter and it crashes and.... dont want to spoil it for others but really surprised at how well that bit played out. Good bit of story telling.

p.s. I refused to buy the full version of Trials HD until i know im up to date on my work

Awesome answer mate, very insightful

Let them off then :)

Don't get me wrong, I love games. When my first 360 failed, I was livid, I did everything I could to make sure the console was well ventilated, made sure it was never dusty. But it still failed. When I got the replacement through, I traded it in for the PS3. I had the PS3 for a year, I loved the facts that its build quality was outstanding, everything ran the way it should, it looked nice next to the rest of my AV setup, it played BR films etc etc. I even convinced all my other mates to purchase one so we could play online games together.

However, after a year, the gaming experience just wasn't the same. The online component is so severly gimped in comparison to the 360's, that I went back. I bought an elite model with the apparent upgraded MOBO, so it 'apparently' shouldn't fail.

So far (fingers crossed) this one has been fine.

It's always in the back of my mind though, that another RROD is right around the corner.
